Experiment Sucessful

I decided to do an experiment. I should have been grading papers, as usual, but I found yet another way to put it off. I'm in good shape on those, really. I only have 5 left to do. Anyway, I have always wanted to try making a corset. I know it's tough and intricate, but dammit, I have wanted to learn forever and I needed an excuse to put off those papers. So I went to the store, bought a pattern, fabric, boning, and other fun stuff, and proceeded to decipher the instructions and the pictures.

First off, I decided that the way the pattern was laid out in terms of where to baste was a little tough. You'd have to have both sides matched EXACTLY to get it right, and needless to say, I wasn't spot on. Next time I'm going to do it on one side and sew through to the other side so it doesn't happen again. Second, I didn't like making the casing for the boning first and then trying to ram it in there; rather, I sewed one side, put the boning in, then pinned the other side and sewed it.

Six hours later I got the lovely front of a corset done. It showed every mistake I made, but the boning was in, the shaping was right, and I was stoked. Then came to look at it. Thereafter it reached new heights of awesomeness. She reminded me that I had a stash of WoW cards from when we were trying to get some special in-game cards (I know, I know). I had made some remark on how I was going to try and make something out of them. So I ran upstairs, grabbed them, and started to experiment some more. It turns out that the cards can se sewed without ruining them, and they are pliable enough to move with the shape of the body.

So I sewed some more cards together, cut them down, and now the front of the corset is made of WoW trading cards. Ultimate dorkdom.

I'm going to post some pictures when the front part is entirely done. I still need to do the finishing on it. After that, the back.
