Actually abby,
that picture is of the Golem, a myth originating in the jewish community of eastern Europe during the middle ages. A myth i have a certain affnity for as i feel it represents several facets of my world view. You see in the Golem legend, a jewish scientist(alchemist, wise-man, etc..) forms the creature out of Clay as a beast of burden for the good of the entire community. In certain versions of the tale, the creature is brought to life by the inscription of the word "aemaeth", meaning 'truth of god'. I favor this rendition as it emphasizes the importance of truth in life. It is also similar to my belief that the physical world is only a manifestion of an...ulterior world (and thusly our bodies only the vessels of our will, spirit, life force, whatever you wish to call it). Essentially, Platos(or was it socrates) idea of our perseption being only the shadows on the wall of a cave, and we bound in our existence, unable to turn and see the light directly. Anywho, the Golem falls in (unrequited) love, and goes insane. So in order to destroy it the townspeople destroy part of the inscription, leaving only "maeth", the hebrew word for death.
popular culture references of similar intent:
"we are spirits in a material world" - the police
"This machinery, will not communicate, these thoughts and the strain i am under" - radiohead (k, that one might be about the musical instruments or something)
Ghost in the Shell 2 - pretty much references the golem myth from start to finish.
If i could be anywhere right now, it would be in the desert during a storm. where the rain is warm and the air is thick with the smell of nitrogen and dirt. Unfortunately the best i can do is listen to "running to Stand Still",.....so ima do that
p.s. The unrequited love, going insane, and dying, parts of aformentioned myth are completely coincidental and irrelevant. disregard.
p.p.s. I chose said picture as it was of the classic siolent film "Der Golem" or for the non-Nazi's out there "The Golem". The fact that theres a girl in it is also entirely coincidental. disregard
p.p.p.s. Abby, when have you seen such a look in my eye?
