Well, after I discovered on Friday morning that I was going to be AWOL from work (apparently my employer, a university, doesn't close for MLK, Jr. day), I decided to stick with my plans and head to Harrisburg. 3 classes and an office hour later and I was off. Zipped up 79 to Cranberry and hopped on the turnpike. I've decided that I may just have to invest in one of those EZ Pass deals if I'm going to keep heading out to Harrisburg and points east.
I arrived after a relatively easy drive at the house of
cutepacub ,
scottcub, and
jacobsladderpa,I thank them again for being gracious hosts. The only downside to the evening was discovering that my cold was coming on full-force, to be peaked on Saturday. Yay congestion!
Despite my protests,
cutepacub managed to get me out of bed and on our way with
richcub2002 and
cubbybear48 down to DC. While the Garmin GPS was pretty good most of the trip down, she had an issue with finding the Metro station. After we solved that little issue, we drove to downtown DC. We gave up trying to find
poohnnova, but did manage to find RayRay. :-)
After dropping off our stuff, we went to the vendor area, where I had some flashbacks to a computer show in Monroeville a few years ago. Needless to say I needed to get the hell out of there, and fortunately
cutepacub was feeling the same way. After catching up with some classic BBC comedy ("Are You Being Served" and "As Time Goes By"), we did some more visiting, then called it a night.
The vendor area was much better on Sunday afternoon. Granted my highlights were: seeing a Macy Gray/Ruby Rhod (from "The Fifth Element") look-alike; watching a mother take her child in a stroller into the area saying "Let's see what's in here!"; and hanging out with some friends.
I never thought I would have BAD chinese food, but we managed to find some at the buffet on 14th St. Now, I can't figure out how chicken & broccoli, General Tso's chicken, and egg rolls could be made bland, but they did it. Even the fountain pink lemonade was bland. Blecch!
After some delicate prodding, I managed to get
cutepacub to stop at Sheetz on the way home so I could use the facilities and indulge in my gummi bears obsession. I did avoid disaster and did not ruin my dinner that
jacobsladderpa prepared. After scarfing that down and taking a power nap, I participated in craft night with everyone and painted a LOVELY birdhouse.
Monday was a nice nap day, then watched a lot of "Top Chef", which goes completely against my reality TV self-imposed ban. Then the drive back went very quickly. Granted the 1st half of the trip was all in fog, and the 2nd half was all in rain, it was a relatively decent drive. I met up with Gregory and had dinner at Johnny Carino's in Monroeville. Food was excellent! Then after a debacle at CompUSA (register wasn't printed receipts properly...very important issue for rebates), managed to make it home all in one piece. Whew!
