Inappropriate contact

This morning I caught the 6:58am bus in front of my house because it was coming (I usually walk 1-2 blocks to catch another, more frequent bus). I sat down in a two-seater near the back of the bus but by the next stop I realized the bus was filling up fast, so I put my backpack on my lap. Normally I can't do this because my bag is so big, but today I left the laptop and accessories home so it worked.

Even with my bag on my lap I'm almost always the last to get a seatmate because of my (not in the good way ;-)) prodigious girth. Well it turned out differently this morning: a guy chose to sit next to me from the very next stop. And he wasn't the thuggie/smelly/shifty-eyed type that normally sits next to me, but the brotha I was surreptitiously eyeing on the same bus sometime last week. About my age, looks a little "sweet" (my assessment from afar last week), clean-cut, cute, painfully-shy looking.

You know how you try never, ever to touch another person on public transport? Well, after one block his calf brushed mine and then it stayed there. I thought at first, "that's a nice moment" but it continued. So I pushed a little back. Our calves remained touching and... hmmm... calves generate a surprising amount of heat when they're locked together for awhile.

And dammit if I didn't get a stiffy. And not just in one place. Woo!

Throughout the ride neither of us said a word. We never looked at one another, and we never glanced past each other's line of vision (very unnatural for a bus ride, IMHO). We just were there, in a moment.

Already last week I'd figured out that this guy was shy even compared to me, and we know that really sucks because I never make the first move. But there's one thing I know for sure:

I'll be on the 6:58am bus tomrorrow morning. :-)

shyness, public transportation, encounters, septa
