So I've just finished my first round of live auditions at Peabody Conservatory (Johns Hopkins for you non-musicians). I must admit, the whole experience was just as gruelling as I expected it to be, but very much anti-climatic. They had the strictest guidelines as to what pieces to play and length of program of the three schools I applied to. They wanted a complete sonata, a virtuosic etude and a piece that was longer than 12 minutes, and the whole program that we were to present had to be no shorter than 60 minutes. That's all fine and whatever.... But they only heard 3 of the 5 pieces!! BITTER I busted my ass to get everything put together. Pulled up an old Beethoven Sonata because I knew the Mozart wasn't going to be ready in time, relearned three movements of my Ginastera Sonata.... I put in a good 5-8 hours of practicing a day while still going to all of my classes (I say this like it's a huge accomplishment, but I only have a few classes where I actually have to show up to...) and learning new instruments for my stupid woodwinds class.
The theory test was simple... harmonic analysis and part writing, ear training test was easy at first, but the last section SUCKED.... I know I was at least a whole step off in part of the piece. My two interviews I had to do were.... eh... whatever. The pedagogy interview was interesting though, because the lady who is in charge of the program there is a KU graduate so we had a nice chat about that. Hardly compares to the stellar interview I did at Indiana 3 years ago when I was going to go there for music education, but I'll take what I can get. It's going to be tough competition, but the more I found out about the program, the more interested I seem to be in it. They only have one or two students every year for piano pedagogy, but it teaches everything I want to be able to do coming out of a Masters Program. We'll see how indiana goes. maybe whichever teacher wanted me last time around will remember me and take me back into his/her studio.... that's a stretch though, but at least I can hope.
Anyways, I'm back in KC for a couple more days, then it's off to Bloomington, IN with dad to hopefully amaze some world class pianists... Here's to that!
