Matt Roush from TV Guide answered a question about NBC's apparent shelving of Rex Is Not Your Lawyer until fall. From his perspective, this is a good thing, and may increase Rex's chances of success.

Question: It's been reported that although NBC was considering fast-tracking David Tennant's NBC pilot, Rex Is Not Your Lawyer, for a possible spring debut, they're deferring that decision for upfront time. (The speculation was that, with these new five hours of programming to fill, completed pilots could be sent to series early in order to fill the gaps.) I've been seeing some concern about the future of this pilot, which has an outstanding cast and the power to bring Doctor Who's David Tennant to America full-time. However, it seems to me like this could actually be a rare good decision on NBC's part. With so many pilots in development (also including J.J. Abrams' Undercovers), it sure looks like they may have an opportunity to turn things around in the fall. With NBC's numbers and reputation as low as they are, I would argue that waiting for fall (even if it increases the uncertainty that the pilot will get picked up to series at all) is the best option for any completed NBC pilot right now. Do you agree? -Allie

Matt Roush: I absolutely agree with this. To rush a show on air that’s as offbeat as this one appears to be could be a huge mistake. Trying to launch something on NBC in the spring risks having it get lost in the current swamp of failure. Much better to wait and put something like this in the mix next season, when NBC pretty much has to take risks to make noise to reverse the PR nightmare of the current debacle. It’s hard to imagine them going anywhere but up, and to do that, they need to get behind at least a few shows in the fall that will command attention (and not the sort that remaking Knight Rider tends to get you). I can’t attest to the quality of Rex at this stage of the game, but NBC could do far worse than building a show around a major talent like David Tennant. Fingers crossed.
