» Name: Chrono (aka “Chrono the Sinner”, “Chrono the Ignoble One”, “Chrono of the Broken Horns”…)
» Fandom: Chrono Crusade

» Canon Point: Volume 4, right before Chapter 26-after dozing off on the plane to San Francisco.
» Gender: Male, both biologically and mentally.
» Age: Never expressly given in the manga, although we know he’s been alive for over 50 years by the time of the main storyline. I’ve heard the mangaka has given his age as about 85, which is what I’m going with. In canon he appears to be 12 when sealed, and about 20 when in his true form (and the manga hints that he’s considered a young adult to demons at his age). He can act very old or pretty young and inexperienced depending on when you catch him.
» Orientation: Heterosexual. He’s strongly implied to have been in love with Mary Magdalene, and by the end of the manga he’s definitely developed strong romantic feelings for Rosette (and is shown kissing her).
» Personality:
On the surface, Chrono appears to be a polite, introverted counterpart to his boisterous and hot-tempered partner, Rosette. Although at times he runs out of patience with her antics, to others Chrono almost always seems to be a well-mannered (if slightly awkward) young boy. However, he’s actually a decades-old demon with a dark and complicated past who struggles with his instincts and past trauma.
Chrono does his best to be a good partner for Rosette, which often means being the voice of reason for her as well as being a more polite advocate for her when she fails to communicate well to other people. He often reminds Rosette and his other friends to keep other’s feelings in mind-he corrects her when she’s harsh to Satella about her attitude toward her lost family (by reminding her of her own missing brother), and he also encourages Satella to try to be gentler to Azmaria’s feelings when she gives her a blunt lecture. Even toward people that dislike him, like his boss Sister Kate, he’ll admit when they’re right and try to see things from their point of view. (He even tries to reason with Aion, despite their history together-but more on that later.)
He also brings this desire to be empathetic in his friendships with other people, particularly Rosette. He often naturally becomes a soundboard to the others he interacts with, doing his best to give advice and comfort when it’s needed. He constantly encourages Rosette in her hunt for Joshua, giving her gentle pushes when needed or just sitting with her and comforting her when she starts to get afraid that they won’t be able to save him. His advice tends to focus on never giving up hope (funny, considering his own struggles) and he’ll often try to carefully plan out the right solution to a problem.
He’s a bit uncomfortable with challenging authority, but he’ll encourage breaking the rules or confronting someone if he believes it’s important. “When it’s important” is the key-demon or not, Chrono isn’t the sort of person that likes to challenge the status quo for the sake of it. When he breaks rules or defies someone that he considers to have seniority over him, he always has a good reason-often to save a life, or to continue forward on his mission to save Joshua.
Of course, for someone that’s uncomfortable with defying authority…he tends to do it a lot. Chrono is an idealist and maybe even a bit naïve. He often keeps moving forward with the idea that somehow, someway, he can change his situation for the better. There HAS to be a way for him to save Mary from her possession without killing her, he HAS to find a way to save Joshua from his own horns, etc. When he’s faced with someone telling him that he MUST give up, he pushes forward defiantly. This isn’t exactly because he’s blindingly optimistic. No, inwardly he’s plagued by a ton of doubt and haunted by the mistakes of his past. He keeps clinging onto his hope that things could be better in part because of the influence of his doubts, fears and anxiety. If he gives up hope and stops believing that things can change for the better, there isn’t a reason behind everything he’s been through and all the sacrifices he’s had to make. His hopeful demeanor isn’t just a reflection of his idealism-it’s desperation.
This is probably in part related to his background, since many of his fellow “Sinners”-his siblings, in a sense-also have the same desperate need to cling onto hope. The Sinners are the only survivors of an attempt by the Elders of the demons to kill off the entire bulk of the younger generations after Chrono’s friend and “brother”, Aion, built up his powers enough that he reached forbidden ancestral memories during his coming of age ceremony. With their only other choice being “stay and be killed”, the Sinners decided to flee their home. Aion and Chrono were the oldest of the group, and both were only just barely considered adults among their people. During the battle in which they tried to run, hundreds if not thousands of Sinners, many just children, were killed. Something snapped in Chrono when he saw this-during the battle he fought purely by his instincts, ripping apart a hundred high-ranking demons in the process. During the remaining Sinner’s attempt to regroup after the battle, Chrono met Mary Magdalene, a seer who he fell in love with. And then he inadvertently killed her. So, yeah, by the time Rosette and her brother found Chrono sleeping in Mary’s tomb (and kicked off the events that lead to the main story), Chrono was already pretty screwed up.
Because of his past, Chrono internalizes a LOT of guilt. He mentions in one of the final chapters that Mary made him promise to not give up before her death, and while none of the characters ever come out and say it, I think it’s possible Chrono possibly would have attempted to kill himself after her death if Mary hadn’t made him take that promise. (And as it is, he’s quite content to allow himself to sleep and slowly starve to death in her tomb.) After the point where I’m taking him, he has a moment where he again tries to force himself into captivity and starve to death-this time to avoid draining Rosette’s lifespan any further-and admits to her when she tries to convince him out of it that he still constantly thinks that maybe there’d been another way, that maybe he could avoid killing Mary and Rosette. On multiple occasions, he’s shown having nightmares about his past. The first few times he faces Aion after his betrayal, he looks almost physically ill. He even refers to himself as being “frozen in time” like the victims of his time-stopping powers. His past is something he’s constantly aware of, and a huge part of his character development is learning to finally move on from his past. Usually being dragged into it kicking and screaming by one of his friends, particularly Rosette.
Because of his guilt for not being able to protect his younger siblings and Mary, he’s VERY protective of innocents and his friends. There’s quite a few times where Chrono is seen throwing himself in front of an attack meant for someone else to keep them safe. With Rosette in particular, he’s protective of her to the point of being possessive. He growls to other demons that her soul is “his”, and when she’s hurt or in danger, he has a tendency to get more ruthless and reckless with his attacks, allowing his demonic instincts to take over.
When Chrono is badly injured in a fight or slow-burning temper is pushed to the limit, a darker side of his personality takes over. As kind as he is, Chrono IS still a demon, and he has a difficult time controlling his instincts. The temper he shows here is completely unlike the frustration he has with Rosette when they fight. When he’s truly pushed to the limit, he becomes a completely different person-his pupils shrink and he throws himself into battle with an animalistic fury. At his worst, he becomes completely unaware of his surroundings and focuses on the targets of his anger, oblivious to the collateral damage he’s causing and will even place his friends and Rosette in danger to finish his opponent-even if trying to protect them was the reason he let his rage take him over in the first place.
Although Chrono’s at the age that he’d be considered very old for a human, because of the long time he spent in mourning for Mary and his troubled past he sometimes comes across as emotionally stunted. He’s certainly more mature than Rosette, but…that’s not really saying a whole lot. He has a tendency to get into petty fights with Rosette and whine when he thinks she’s being unfair. Also, at times he has difficulty really managing his emotions. This is most often seen when he lets his instincts take over, but he also has a bad habit of not dealing with his emotions when he’s upset or hurt, which comes back to bite him later. If Joshua hadn’t gotten involved with Aion, he would’ve been content to continue to run from his past. He doesn’t confront his past because he wants to-he’s FORCED into it. Because he bottles up a lot inside, when push comes to shove he’s prone to breaking down. Rosette is usually able to help him calm down, but when her support is removed from him for whatever reason, he’s that much more likely to hit a breaking point-whether it’s his demonic rage taking over, or otherwise having a breakdown.
I’m mentioning Rosette a lot in this app because she’s THE most important person in Chrono’s life. As much as he supports her, she supports him just as much, if not more. She’s often one of the few people that can reach him when his demonic instincts take over (although not always). They’ve spent enough time together that she can read his emotions well (and he can read hers), and she knows what to say to him to help him keep pushing forward even when he feels like giving up. She’s a lot of the reason why he HAS managed to keep a sense of hope and idealism still. By the end of the manga, it’s clear that he’s in love with her. By the time I’m taking him from, he hasn’t said that he’s in love with her (and might not yet be thinking of her romantically), but his feelings are slowly growing for her more and more, and he’s slowly starting to open up to her about his past.
» Appearance: Chrono looks like a boy of twelve or an athletic man of 20 depending on whether or not his powers are sealed. In both forms he has purple hair and tan skin with pointed ears, claw-like nails and pupils that look a bit feline. In his sealed form he’s a few inches under five feet, has his hair long and tied back in a braid, and wears a red suit with shorts, a coat, and a cape around his shoulders. He wears a headband around his forehead at nearly all times. He looks like a preteen (and even gets hit on by a professed shotacon), but is stronger than he appears, which allows him to carry a small armory on his back as support for Rosette.
When Rosette unseals his powers, he reveals his true, fully demonic form. His hair is hacked shorter, and in place of his braid is a long steel “tail” of sorts that grows from the base of his head. His eyes turn golden from the influx of astral energy, and his build is tall and muscular. Three extra red eye spots appear on his forehead in the shape of a triangle and his ears grow longer and are marked by a tuff of hair or fur at the base. In this form (barring a few costume changes) he wears demonic clothing of a dark blue jacket (without anything underneath) and leather pants with spats and boots pulled over them. He has a pair of bat-like wings that sprout through his jacket. On his head are a pair of steel caps covering the stumps of the horns that were ripped from his head a half-century ago by Aion-they’re bolted in place to his cheeks in an attempt to protect his wounds.
In Amat his powers will still be sealed, but his sealed form will be aged up-thus, he’ll take on a form he used to take back when he had his horns, where he’s powered down but still looks about 20. His eyes are red, his ears are shorter with no hair tuffs, and he’ll be wearing a headband over his forehead where his eyespots would usually be like he does in his sealed form, but he’ll still be tall and muscular. Most of the features that identify him as a demon will be missing-no horn caps, no tail, no wings. However, his hair is still chopped down to a bit past his shoulders. Besides his odd hair, ears and eyes he looks mostly human in this form.
I’ll be using icons from flashbacks to reflect the age he appears to look, but I might use some icons from his sealed form to fill in gaps of expressions. (I’ll try to be clear on which form is the form he’s actually in to other players.)
» Suitability: N/A, although Chrono appears 12 when his powers are sealed, he’s well over the age of consent and is considered an adult by his people (and generally acts as one).

[Accidental Video]
[When the camera switches on, it’s pretty clear it’s an accident-it’s mostly focused on the window in one of the palace rooms, the drapes drifting in the sea breeze. This would all be a rather pleasant, if it wasn’t for the scene to the left of the window. On the left edge of the screen is one of the palace maids and a tall young man who’s probably a stranger to most people watching the entry. He has purple hair and pointed ears, and stands with a slim athletic build. He’s wearing what looks to be a robe he found in the bathroom-and it appears to be the only thing covering his bronzed skin. The man is clearly agitated and arguing with the poor maid, who is doing her best to calm him down. She’s far enough away from the device that it’s difficult to make out what she’s saying, but the man’s voice is raised enough that everything he says comes in loud and clear, other than the recording starting in the middle of a sentence.]
--need to know where I am, and where my partner is NOW. Is this San Francisco?
[The maid shakes her head, and it sounds like she’s saying something about the island being Atia.]
Atia? I’ve never heard…no, nevermind. [His tone is increasingly upset, but he seems to be struggling to remain calm and try to work with her.] Who brought me here, and what do they want? And where is Rosette?
[The maid responds speaking in the sort of tone you take when you try to calm someone down.]
Look, do you know what’s happening or not? Who are you working for? Take me to them so they can tell me what their demands are! I need to find Rosette!
[The maid points over to the device. He turns and looks over at the camera and stares at it with red eyes, his expression confused and frustrated.] No, a person. I need to speak to a real person, not…whatever that thing is. [His frown deepens.] Wait-that looks like some sort of…communication…[His eyes go wide. Something seems to have fallen into place. He whirls on his heels back toward the maid, his tone now fierce with an underlying layer of panic.] Where is he?! Where is Aion?? Or are you working for the Pursuers?
[The maid doesn’t know what the hell he’s talking about and quickly backs up, trying to reassure him. He growls and looks like for a moment he’s about to attack her, but jerks back and marches toward the device as the maid flees out of the room behind him. The camera jostles as he picks up the device and glares at it. Noting that it seems to be recording he speaks urgently--]
Rosette! Rosette, are you on this thing?? If you can figure out how to respond back-[He pauses and shakes his head.] No, ignore that, that’ll take too much time. I’m on a room on the second floor. Come find me-no, I’ll find you. We need to get out of here, NOW!

It was difficult for Chrono to sleep on the plane. Even when he could ignore the overly loud motor and the way the plane vibrated when it hit a bad pocket of air, Rosette kept sighing and getting up from her seat to pace or go try to talk to Father Gilliam. He was debating getting up from his seat and trying to talk to her. Rosette had been a restless person from the moment he met her-that was half the reason why they ended up getting in so much trouble-so he didn’t want to unnecessarily speak up. She was old enough now that sometimes he had to give her some space and let her figure things out on her own. And it made sense that she was nervous, since they were finally on their way to finding Joshua. This was what they’d dedicated the last four years of their lives to, after all.
Still, he thought to himself as his head dropped to his chest, I should probably talk to her soon if she doesn’t get some sleep…
He shook his head and opened his eyes, looking up at the stars. The wounds on his head still burned, but the pain was lessening and draining away. Somehow, it really worked. His horns really did heal over. He was alive…
He could still hear Mary at his side, panting softly, and could still feel his claws against her skin and her hand on his chest. He turned his head to look at her. She seemed paler now, and her cheeks were still stained with tears, but she was smiling. “You look better…thank God!” Her hand went up to his cheek and wiped away some of the drying blood from the corner of his mouth.
Wait, this was the past, wasn’t it? Mary is…
He sat up and looked over at her in confusion, about to ask for an explanation, when she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him. Still breathing out declarations of gratitude to her god, she kissed him again and again, tugging his poncho off over his head so similarly to the when she’d tried to convince him to let her wash his clothes that first day they’d spent together. Actually, she was wearing the same underclothes that she’d worn that day, too.
No, this wasn’t right. This didn’t happen when they made the contract. He was sure it was nothing like this!
Oh, this is a dream, he thought to himself as Mary climbed onto his lap. He felt a little dirty that he was actually having this sort of dream about this particular moment.
Not that it stopped him from reaching up to tug onto the laces of her corset to try to undo them. How many times had he imagined taking this off of her? How many times had he tried to remember the outline of her body in her underclothes, and tried to imagine how her breasts might look like under that thin, wet cotton fabric?
Rosette would call him perverted, and he’d deserve it, too. It almost felt heretical, lusting after Magdalene, his dream-self reaching up to the chest where he’d sunk his claws in to complete the contract just moments before to instead grope her breast. But, still, even if it was just a dream, it was nice to think of a happier moment with Mary. It was nice to think of them as something close to a normal, happy couple. Maybe just one dream wouldn’t be so terrible…
Toward the end of the dream he could feel himself waking up, and he clung to it just as desperately as, in the dream, he clung to Mary. No, not yet. This dream was so beautiful it almost hurt, but he didn’t want to wake up yet-
Chrono groaned as the sun warmed his face and the sea breeze tickled his nose, dragging him awake. He turned and buried his face into his pillow, desperately trying to keep the last lingering moments of the dream fresh in his mind. Every time he dreamed of Mary, his chest felt hollow in the morning and it was hard to force himself out of bed to start the day. Maybe he could sleep in today. Maybe the Elder would cover for him somehow. Although he should probably get out of bed and do the laundry before the Elder can see the mess he made in the sheets and start making dirty jokes about…
His eyes flew open and he stared at the drapes around the bed. He wasn’t in the Elder’s shack. He wasn’t supposed to be anywhere near it, they were supposed to be going to San Francisco. What happened to the plane? Where was Rosette and the others? He sat up in his bed and tried to remember the night before. Was he mistaken? Did they make it? It definitely smelled like they were in California now-the scent of sea salt was almost overwhelming to his senses. But he couldn’t for the life of him remember going to a hotel, and this was definitely too extravagant to be a branch of the Magdalan Order. Plus, everything in the room felt odd. It was too small. It was like everything had shrunk around him as he slept. His feet were even dangling slightly off the foot of the bed.
Panic suddenly gripped his chest. The seal! Rosette had released his seal! That meant she was in danger! He jumped from the bed and ran to the window to try to see if he could spot her. No, she definitely wasn’t out there. He didn’t sense her out there, either. In fact, he couldn’t sense…anything.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the reflection of his face in the opened window and turned toward it. The face looking back at him was one he hadn’t seen in over half a century. It wasn’t his true form, but he wasn’t sealed, either. It was the form he used to take when conserving his energy and trying to blend in more with humans. That, combined with the sudden deadening of his senses-he couldn’t even feel the slow drain of astral as before-made him think that, somehow, his powers were being blocked. But how? He glared at his reflection, turning his eyes toward the collar he could see around his neck. It was red leather and brass studs, looking almost like a parody of the headband he’d taken to wearing the last few years. He grit his teeth and tried to pull it off around his neck, but no matter how hard he tugged it wouldn’t budge, and all he got for his trouble was the collar’s edges biting into the back of his neck. He swore softly under his breath. That just confirmed that something was wrong-even sealed, he’d normally have the strength to break a band like this if he tried. Someone, or something, had put him into this trap.
He started to frantically search the room for any sort of sign of where he was. He found his clothing folded at the foot of the bed. His red coat hung comically from his hand when he picked it up, the coat tails barely reaching past his waist. (Was he really THIS small in his sealed form?) He half-considered running out of the room naked to try to find Rosette, but fortunately he found a bathrobe that he could use to cover himself with. After he quite thoroughly ransacked the room without much success, he decided he’d have to take his search elsewhere. With a soft growl, he marched out of his room.
