As the mornings get darker, I wish to alert you all to something I wrote a little while ago about dawn simulators, not just because it's brilliantly written, but because it truly does make my winter so much happier, and I want you all to be happy too.

Interesting. What's a "study lamp"?

Ok, so a study lamp is just well, a lamp. Like on a table. We have that next to the bed, but we use it in the evening. Is there a way that you can turn it on and off in the evening and have it come on in the morning? I mean, without splicing wires and potentially electrocuting yourself? Or do you just have two lamps next to the bed?

None of the table lamps that we have take standard size light bulbs. They all take small light bulbs that just don't come in low-energy compact fluorescent.

It would be nice too if it could grow brighter over like 20 minutes instead of the 30-60 seconds that it takes a low energy bulb to warm up.

I used to have a really nifty timer switch thingy that had a switch that you could use manually, and then the times you had "programmed" caused it to flick that same switch automatically. I haven't seen one of those since though, and I've lost mine, infuriatingly. So, I just have two lamps now.

My reading lamp does take an ordinary sized bulb, lucky me. I've had it for years but I suspect you can still get them.

If you do want it to grow brighter slowly over 20 minutes, then you are into the "buy a proper dawn simulator" territory. I balk at the £60 price tag but if it'll make your mornings more tolerable I think it's worth it.

Hm, we currently have Just Enough Lamps, and no timer switches. I'd like to try this technique, but build or buy?

I looked at a couple of web sites that insist that the whole "gradually getting brighter" thing is an important part of the process. But then they have dawn simulators to sell.
