There and back again...

A yellow taxi pulled into the drive of St. Catherine's School for Girls, and the grizzled driver peered out of his grimy windshield at the stately grounds ( Read more... )

Lounging in the midday sun, Hino Rei was stretched out on a folding chair in the small lawn in front of the dormitory. She heard a vehicle in the distance, near the main gate, but with it being the Summer semester new students were already beginning to make their way to the campus. Thinking little of it, she stared idly into the clouds, a small part of her wishing that she still had access to her friend's private beach house in Japan...or at least that she would have thought to remain in Hawaii for a few extra days instead of immediately returning with Liz and River.

With a sigh, the raven-haired girl closed her eyes as she soaked in the warm summer's day. But her spiritual sense remained as sharp as ever, and she again became aggravated as she Saw the aura of a classmate approaching. This is just great, she silently complained. What's so relaxing about sunbathing when people keep walking past all the time?Violet eyes opened and peered out from behind darkened glasses, wanting to see just who felt the need to bother her. Her ( ... )

Spotting her raven-haired friend, Utena broke into a casual lope, devouring the space between them easily, despite the heavy luggage she carried. Dropping the bags unceremoniously on the lawn in front of Rei, she smiled brightly, showing white, even teeth.

"I don't know about a nice time, but we did a lot of training. It was great!" She turned her body and did a mock-bodybuilder pose, showing lean, firm muscles.

"What about you, how was your summer?"

Leaning forward, she gently tugged Rei into her arms for an affectionate hug.

Unable to hide her smile any longer, Rei attempted to return the hug as best she was able with her body stretched out. "I thought it would be something you'd like. I don't train as much as you probably did, but I've been to that area in the past for meditation."

Releasing the embrace, Rei pulled her darkly-tinted glasses away from her face, now able to look at Utena more directly. "Well," she started, not sure how to describe how much could happen at a magical school such as that in two entire months. "A lot's happened since you've been gone. You know how things can be..."

Utena nodded, and dropped into a squat in the grass, elbows resting on her knees and hands dangling in front of her casually. Tossing her pink hair out of her face and flashing a smile at her friend, she settled in to hear the news.

"Yeah, I know...wanna give me the high points? I'm not in any hurry," she grinned.

"The worst of it was Liz. She...had some trouble at home, and I took a trip of my own to bring her back." Rei attempted a weak smile, and while she was glad she was able to rescue her friend the serious nature of the girl's troubles was still uncomfortable to think about. "So she's here again. And Katelyn seems happy to hear that, so maybe she'll be distracted enough not to tackle you as soon as she sees that you're back as well?" At this amusing thought, her grin became more honest. "It was hard enough to pry her loose the first time you begged me for help."

"River's friends flew in from...wherever they're from. It was a little unusual having a spaceship in the parking lot, but her crewmates all seemed interesting." A hand was raised to her chin as she continued to think aloud. "Several students decided to see what the American Independance Day was like. I'm not sure I see the entire point of the holiday, but Ralph was more than willing to make homemade explosives to celebrate his national day ( ... )

Seeing her friend's face fall, Utena shifted out of her comfortable crouch and stood, unconsciously clenching her sword hand. She gazed worriedly at her friend.

"Rei, what happened?"

Rei could feel the seriousness in the girl's aura, and slowly stood up as well. Taking a deep breath, she pushed her feelings deep inside while she cursed herself for allowing herself to be so easily read. Taking on the detatched, distant, and mysterious look that she was known for, she attempted to deny that anything was wrong.

"It's okay, really." A slightly nervous Rei forced herself to chuckle as she waved dismissively. "E-Everything is, all right. Just, well, a stressful situation or two..."

"That Mysterious Queen Rei-sama act might work on your followers, but not on your best friend."

Touching Rei's shoulder, Utena fixed her with a serious look.

"I can tell something's wrong, and if you don't tell me I'll be really worried..."

Sadness could easily be seen in the miko's eyes, though she remained silent, not able to think of the words to say nor wanting to speak them at all. "It's..." It's too painful to talk about.

Instinctively, Rei turned her head to one side, hoping to hide her features behind a wall of midnight tresses. "It's....it's nothing.""

Perching carefull on the lounge next to Rei, Utena draped an arm around her shoulders, stroking her raven hair.

"You and I both know that it's not, Rei-chan," she said, bringing out the rarely used appellation and speaking softly in Japanese.

Also speaking in Japanese, Rei hesitantly replied. "It's Minako," she said with an equally rare lack of honorific. "Things...haven't been going so well, since you left."
