Summary: Atobe and Sanada meet in the gym for a bit of private training and at least Sanada makes a real effort not to destroy anything. Sanada shows off his neat new trick and Atobe... is Atobe.

It had been months since they'd last faced one another like this - when they had been training in private, it was a daily exercise. Atobe lifted his hands to pull the hood of his sweatshirt over his hair and looked back to Sanada standing across from him in the dark gym. The danger room was out of the question; there was too high of a chance that another student would stumble upon them. Equally dangerous would be venturing off-campus where they ran the risk of encountering humans.

Standing once more in front of Atobe like this felt somewhat strange, but yet every bit familiar even if months had passed by without them so much as talking with one another. Sanada found himself slipping easily into the determined mindset he would've had once upon a time ago during training while they were still studying together. If there was one thing Sanada could say about Atobe, it was that he could very easily rile Sanada up with little to no effort. Flexing and unflexing his fingers at his side, Sanada called out, "Without destroying the gymnasium."

A coy smirk pulled at Atobe's lips as he rolled his shoulders back. "I had no idea you were so attached to it," he responded as the temperature around him began to drop rapidly. His breath was visible in front of him and the faintest hint of frost crept across the gym floor under the soles of his cross-trainers. "You're the one who needs the practice - what is it you're hoping to perfect?"

Similarly, the temperature around Sanada began to rise as he conjured a small hint of a flame in the palm of his hand, glancing down at it as he gathered his thoughts together, expression unreadable. "I discovered that I can create what are essentially... human-like forms, but I'm having difficulties controlling them, so to speak."

"Human-like?" Quietly, Atobe's eyes traced along Sanada, re-memorizing an already familiar stance. Some time had passed, there was no doubt that there would probably be an unpleasant surprise awaiting him if he were to underestimate Sanada when they were training. This was not to say that Atobe was not prepared to surprise his old training partner horribly if need be in order to secure victory and assure that Sanada learned something from it. After all, in a sense, he was training not only with his former partner but his future partner as well.

"Yes - they take on a human form, though obviously they cannot have a mind of their own." Extinguishing the flame, Sanada straightened his shoulders, looking back at Atobe with a cool gaze despite every last nerve of his body feeling, almost quite literally, on fire. Admittedly, he had been horribly curious to find out in just what way Atobe had improved since the last time they trained - he knew that it wouldn't be smart to underestimate him in the least.

Atobe lifted one hand, making a beckoning motion by curling his fingers. "Let's see what you've got."

Although dangerous to take the risk, Sanada briefly closed his eyes in order to gather his wits and fully concentrate before reopening them, quickly creating a flame before manipulating it into one of the beings he was talking about, and sending it in Atobe's direction as he glanced around the room to figure out where to go from there.

It was indeed a nearly human form - though it did not seem to possess any particular drive or intelligence for Atobe to be wary of. He focused on creating a thin layer of ice to cover his arms as a means of protection, first, then held out his hands before the flame could reach him, enveloping it in an icy wind to suffocate the flame. "All you're going to do is startle someone with that." His eyes stayed on Sanada and he advanced slowly two steps, the ice creeping up over his shoulders and forming over his chest and back.

Careful to remain firmly rooted to the spot even as Atobe advanced closer, Sanada slowly let out a breath as he focused on the flame closely, not allowing it to be put out completely even though it was mostly useless to even try. "Hn." He was not going to get anywhere by simply throwing things in Atobe's direction and hoping for the best, so instead he focused on upping the temperature around him even more with the idea of weakening Atobe's means of protection.

"Don't get cute with me, Sanada Genichirou!" Atobe quite suddenly dropped to his knees, touching his hand to the floor of the gym, sending ice darting across the floor and under Sanada's feet. Simultaneously, the ice encased his body, flexible and comfortable and yet could easily deflect Sanada's flames so long as he had no intent to a) kill Atobe and b) light the gym on fire. Atobe intensified the gust of icy wind, this time directing it at his training partner, instead, hoping to knock him from his feet.

Sanada swore under his breath as he lost his footing, stumbling backwards and sliding across the ice under him a couple of feet. However, he did not fall - he would never allow himself to do such a thing in Atobe's presence, even if it required administrating a kendo stance to center his sense of balance even with the icy wind that rapidly cooled the air around him. Temper flaring, Sanada immediately made his own body temperature skyrocket again, the ice below him melting and the residual water evaporating. He didn't want to set the whole gym on fire, but he was going to have to do something before Atobe made an ice rink out of the gym floor. Aiming a flame specifically to the ground, Sanada didn't waste any time in making it larger, surrounding them in a ring of fire.

If the fire concerned Atobe in the least, it did not show in his eyes. He got back to his feet casually and pulled his hood back off his head, assessing Sanada quickly. There was no desire in Sanada to actually harm Atobe - no matter how long this sparring session went on, the outcome will still inevitably be the same. The younger mutant held up his arm, the ice that formed his armor extending slightly to form a shield. With the other, he formed a thin sword of ice. He might not have years upon years of kendo under his belt like his opponent, but he knew how to fight with a saber. Wasting no time, he lunged at Sanada in full confidence that it would be evaded.

Now this was something Sanada could deal with easily while thinking very minimally. As though it were the most natural thing in the world, he evaded the advance swiftly and completely, forcing the ring around them to widen and allow more room to move freely. Concentrating fully, he once more allowed himself to create one of the flame beings wielding a katana that he sent in Atobe's direction again, mentally pouring in all his skill and causing it to move near identically to how Sanada would while facing his oldest brother in the dojo - offensively. He wasn't going to take a defensive stance any longer.

Atobe smirked, facing the flame figure with the same respect as he would pay Sanada himself. "That's better," he said encouragingly, his voice just barely carrying over the sound of the flame surrounding them. He had to focus on the figure to keep from taking any sort of hit, though he would have been protected by the ice that had by now covered every last inch of his body. Once he could find the opening - the inevitable weakness - he could refocus his attack on the real opponent.

In an effort to maintain the figure that was battling it out with Atobe, Sanada allowed the fire to extinguish around them, leaving the room near silent with the exception of the two forms still in front of him. There had to be a way that he could destroy the ice protecting Atobe's body without seriously injuring him. He was also well aware of Atobe trying to find the weakness in what he was facing, and Sanada was careful to not allow it to be obvious. The level of control Sanada had of it was every bit amazing, but even just a flicker of concentration lost and he would inevitably lose. He hadn't mastered this, yet - not by far. While maintaining the speed of which the figure was moving, he also sent a heat wave spiraling at Atobe, clenching his teeth as he refused to take his eyes off his former training partner.

There's your weakness. Atobe lowered his shield and sword, letting both be consumed in the heatwave and making no effort to stop the advance of the flaming figure.

Sanada watched with close eyes as Atobe ceased to put forth the effort to defend himself, and while there was nothing stopping him from allowing the figure to consume the younger mutant, the point still remained - Sanada could not harm a hair on Atobe's head. Swearing quietly under his breath again, Sanada had no choice but to wave it away - the flames disappearing as quickly as they had been created - and he just stared.

Atobe rolled his shoulders, again, allowing the armor to drop away. "That's a neat trick you have there. But it requires a great deal of your concentration." He glanced up at the ceiling of the gym, then back down to Sanada. "We're going to need a better space than this to practice with that properly - like the one we trained in together, before."

Giving a short nod, Sanada allowed himself to somewhat relax - not become completely unguarded, but simply physically stand more comfortably. Maintaining that form and making it move in a human-like fashion took a lot out of him. Letting out a slow breath, Sanada explained, "It's a recent development. The danger room would be more appropriate, but if you are set on not displaying your true abilities to others, right now, that's out of the question."

"They have no reason to know," replied Atobe with a shrug. Of course he could not show the full extent of his power in training without raising a few eyebrows when he was intentionally letting everyone jump to the wrong conclusions about his powers. More importantly he was a firm believer that if it was not needed, do not use it - reserve the truly impressive powers for only when they are absolutely needed. "You shouldn't be so afraid to hurt me. As your friend, trust that I won't let you. And in today's world, there's simply no telling - I may one day be your enemy."

Barely giving Atobe enough time to finish his sentence before uttering a "hn," Sanada folded his arms across his chest, glancing away. He had been brought up with the idea that slapping people around was sometimes necessary if deserving, and there had been several times when Sanada himself had been hit. However, when someone did nothing to warrant that, he simply could not hurt them no matter in what way - powers or no powers. "It's a risk I'm not comfortable taking, currently." Idly conjuring another flame, he let it take on the shape of a firefly and sent it randomly flying across the gym to give himself something to focus on. "As your friend." He glanced back at Atobe out of the corner of his eye.

A moment of quiet fell between them, the smug expression falling from Atobe's face and being replaced with something far more genuine - almost delicate. "You can't hurt me anywhere you're concerned about." Once more he pulled the hood up over his hair, turning toward the door in an obvious display of putting his back to Sanada. "I'd say we should continue this in a better location another night."

A slight frown tugged at Sanada's lips as he put out the firefly and said quietly, "Very well." Silently, he made his way toward the exit of the gymnasium, not bothering to look back at Atobe as he squared his shoulders.

Atobe dropped his hands into the large pocket of his sweatshirt and followed after Sanada wordlessly. All this talk of being training partners or even friends gave Atobe hope for at least one thing - he was still in the position to influence Sanada as was his whole purpose in Ryuhana. Generally speaking, everything was going smoothly and according to plan.

sanada, atobe
