Summary: Oishi's mental and physical exhaustation finally makes him collapse; after Tomoka gives Eiji the bad news, he sneaks into medlab... and they take *the* decision regarding their relationship.
A petite girl was leaving the gym, sports bag in hand and still clad in gym clothes. She wanted to go to the nearby showers to clean herself before going back to her bedroom, but another girl stopped her right in her way there, whispering something in her ear.
"WHAT?"
The first girl's eyes went wide as she listened to her friend and then almost yelled in distress and surprise, much to the other's embarrassment. She continued speaking in a low voice, finishing with a "Could you tell Eiji-kun about this, Tomoka-chan?"
"Eh, yes, I will. Thank you, Ami-chan. Go back to the dorm and don't worry."
The other girl nodded before leaving Tomoka on her own, and forgetting about the shower she wanted to take to wash the sweat of her skin, the gym girl dashed towards the tree in front of Eiji and Oishi's common room. She needed to talk to Eiji, and to do it NOW. So, as soon as she reached the tree, she looked up and yelled: "Eiji-chan! Are you there? Gotta speak to you right now, Eiji-chan!"
Eiji was actually in the tree, trying to figure out what to do. After what that 86--something guy had said (and he was a mean person, really, insulting people like that online) Eiji had wanted to figure out why he'd said that. Was it because other people did it? Did that work that way for other people? Not like Eiji was about to ask, even if he knew Ryoma and Niou dated--he didn't want to know about icky stuff, thankyouverymuch. Actually, come to think of it, were Ryoma and Niou ... well, were they? Was that why Niou had lube?
Eyes widening, Eiji had to catch himself to prevent himself from falling off the branch. No no no no. He shook his head vigourously. Whatever Ryoma and Niou were doing was none of Eiji's business, and he would stop right there. Besides, where was Oishi? It was a while after the end of Oishi's shift, really, and Oishi should have been back by now. Eiji couldn't confess to Oishi if Oishi wasn't around, could h--
Tomoka's voice reached Eiji's kitty ears, and he looked down. Oh, it _was_ Tomoka. "Coming, Tomo-chan!" A leap, gracefully bounding off the tree, tail swinging happily, and Eiji somersaulted off the tree to land perfectly on his feet in front of Tomoka. "Hehe, I've been practicing," he said, grinning. "What's the hurry?"
"Eiji-chan... WAH!"
She didn't expect him to jump off the tree that soon, so distraught she was upon the news. Once the initial shock passed, she shook her ponytailed head and looked at Eiji right in the eye.
"Ami-chan gave me a message for you, Eiji-chan," the light-bending girl quickly said, wishing she wasn't the one telling him this. "Listen... Oishi will have to spend the night in medlab, and maybe even some more. He passed out from exhaustation some hours ago, so Mariko-sensei doesn't want him to come back to your room until at least tomorrow, so he doesn't get even worse."
Eyes widening, Eiji's ears flattened. Poor Oishi! "Mou, Oishi, you overworked yourself again," Eiji said to no one in particular, pouting, before he focused back on Tomoka again. "Gomen, Tomoka, I'm going to see Oishi, nya!" Before Tomoka could say anything, Eiji was gone, back up the tree and into his room.
Gathering some things Oishi might want (toothbrush, a change of clothes, some other random things Eiji remembered seeing Oishi use before bed), Eiji was soon knocking on the door to medlab. It was of no use, though--the bag was taken, and Eiji was thanked, but no, Oishi was resting, and Eiji was not to disturb his roommate, so shoo, run along.
As if Eiji could sleep alone, or go another moment without telling Oishi how he felt about Oishi! But Eiji nodded and left, and somehow managed to spend the rest of the day in a daze, getting his homework done without really thinking about it, and staring out at the sky from his branch. It was late now, and he was tired, but he'd had a few catnaps (fifteen minutes on the branch, ten minutes in between pages of homework) and he was going to see Oishi tonight, so no one could stop him, nya.
Medlab wasn't guarded, and the alarm hadn't been set, so Eiji managed to slip in easily, and found Oishi, sleeping in one of the cots. His roommate looked pale and tired, even in the dim light cast by the flashlight Eiji had brought. Pulling up a chair, Eiji sat down beside the bed and took Oishi's hand. "Mou, Oishi ... Natsuki-chan won't be happy to hear this, nya," he said softly, squeezing his roommate's hand, and then laying his head on the mattress. He was a little tired, nya. Maybe a quick catnap ... It wasn't long before Eiji was asleep.
Mmmm... Oishi half-opened his grenish eyes, blinking against the darkness. His last memories were of himself laying down on the bed after Mariko-sensei gave him some chamomile tea (concidentally, the same brand uncle Akitaka used to drink when he was sleepless, Oishi could remember it well), trying to relax so he could properly rest after days of worry and over worry over his sister and friends...
With all of his senses much clearer, Oishi could aknowledge the changes on his surroundings much clearly. And he wasn't alone. A warm, slender hand was taking his own... a person slumped on the mattress... one whose head was crowned by red hair and kitty ears.
"Eiji, you..."
Out of habit, the healer extended his free hand and scratched behind Eiji's ears to wake up the cat boy without shocking him.
Oh, that was nice. "Kaa-san, you scratch like Oishi," Eiji purred softly, mumbling softly in his sleep. Contentedly stretching in his dream, he then stretched in real life, and began to wake up. But ... why was he sleeping sitting up?
Cracking open an eye, Eiji realized he was in medlab, at school. Oishi! Looking up quickly, he grinned up at his roommate, who was the one scratching, not his mother. "Feeling better, nya?"
Oishi kept scratching affectionately behind the kitten ears. Eiji looked tired as well... oh, for how long had he been there, taking care of his medlab-bound self?
"Still...," Oishi whispered, fingers scratching behind Eiji's ears, hand holding the other's. "Still tired, and it may not go away for a while. But it's normal... I'll be fine soon, Eiji. Mariko-sensei says I'll be able to leave medlab tomorrow noon and go back to our room."
The scratching became slower, and Oishi's hand softly ran through the reddish hair, almost shyly. His body felt numb, and his own mind was still a little slow...
The words were comforting, but Eiji's ears twitched under Oishi's fingers. Even the way Oishi scratched his ears were tired. Eiji was certainly enjoying the attention as Oishi scratched and ran fingers through Eiji's hair, but his roommate was overworked and tired and Eiji was here to make sure Oishi recovered.
"Oi~shi, you should sleep," he complained, and rummaged in his mind for the sleepy emotion. It was hiding in a corner, white and blue and fluffy (it reminded Eiji of a cartoon cloud). Pulling it into the center of his thoughts, Eiji pulled up the switch in his mind, trying to send sleepiness into Oishi's head so his roommate would sleep and rest.
Oishi didn't really want to sleep, though. As he could remember more nad more bits of the last hours, including their awkward first kiss and all that came along with it.
"No, Eiji... not yet... I don't want to sleep yet...," he murmured. He still had things to say and ask, so he wouldn't let them go unsaid if he could help it...
"But Oishi," Eiji said, pouting even as he stuffed the sleep-cloud back in the corner of his mind, "You need to rest, nya." He pulled his emotion-lever back down again, anyway, and flopped his chin down on the mattress beside Oishi's arm. Taking Oishi's hand again, Eiji snuggled it, using Oishi's arm as a temporary cushion.
"I know, Eiji, I know that," he whispered, lifting a hand to stroke Eiji's cheek. "But... wait, please. I don't think I'll be able to sleep well if I don't tell you something."
He sighed deeply, placing his free hand on Eiji's cheek. Then he spoke, quietly, trying to not let his feeling slip and interrupt him. "Eiji... I'm sorry. I was just too shocked to think straight last night, and too worried about Natsuki and anything else to really think of what you felt..."
Oh ... it was about last night. Eiji remembered how he'd slept on his wet pillow, but also how everyone had offered wonderful advice on the journals, and he squeezed Oishi's arm and nuzzled against it. It sounded like Oishi had more to say, though, and Eiji didn't want to tire Oishi out, so he waited for Oishi to finish.
"Well..." Eiji looked receptive, and this relaxed Oishi a big deal, so his words started flowing more freely and more in tune with his feelings about the issue.
"Honestly said, Eiji, I asked you about kissing because each kiss has different meanings. And the one you gave me... it's not easy to explain it without sounding cheesy or anything...," he fumbled a bit, somewhat reminded of his sister's shoujo manga, "let's say it has quite the deep meaning. And it scared me more than a little, since I wasn't sure if you understood what a kiss on the lips does mean, either in manga or in real life..."
Eiji knew he had to tell Oishi now, before Oishi rambled on and tired himself out again. "Ne, Oishi, I kissed you because I like you, nya." Suddenly shy, Eiji looked away, flushing as red as his hair. It was probably a good thing he hadn't thought seriously about what he'd feel or think when saying this to Oishi, because if Eiji had known he'd feel like this--uneasy and uncertain and nervous, Eiji knew these feelings, they felt like going to the dentist--then he would have been much more hesitant about telling Oishi how he felt.
Gently but firmly, Oishi's hand pushed Eiji's face up a little, making him look into his eyes. "Don't say it as if it's a bad thing, Kikumaru Eiji. There's nothing inherently wrong with having feelings and liking people, after all... the problem comes with how are they handled. And that's one reason why I freaked out... I was not sure if you had clear in which way you liked me, as if as a best friend... or something more than that."
His last words were practically a whisper, and per instinct he leaned a little closer to the catboy.
Looking into Oishi's green eyes, Eiji nodded, suddenly realising just how close Oishi's face and his own were. Unable to speak, the catboy merely stared dumbly at Oishi, leaning a little closer unconsciously. It was a few long seconds that felt like eternity before Eiji asked, "Ne, Oishi ... do you like me?"
Oishi decided that it was now or never, even for someone so NOT propense to take risks like him. He smiled a little before nodding, and then he reached for Eiji and placed a kiss on his lips, very gently to tell the catboy that yes, he liked (and maybe even loved) him, without scaring Eiji away...
He'd asked, and Oishi had NODDED. Oishi liked him too! Even as Oishi gently kissed Eiji's lips, Eiji's heart was suddenly overwhelmed by the Oishi-feelings he had, and he kissed back, happily, trying not to overwhelm Oishi by glomping the other and cuddling and squeezing Oishi happily, even though that was exactly what Eiji wanted to do very badly.
If Eiji could jump on the cot, he would have, but it was unlikely the hospital cot would take them both, not if Eiji was that rough ... but oh, OISHI ... Eiji purred and squeezed Oishi's hands and tried to prolong the kiss, but eventually it had to end, and the catboy was perhaps a little more clingy. "Oishi," Eiji said, pouting, "can I sleep with you in the bed? I'll be careful not to break it, nya."
"Well, Eiji...," the completely-overjoyed-but-still-cautious healer said, stroking Eiji's cheek, "do you think you can be awake and back to our room before Mariko-sensei comes in? As long as you can do it, I have no reason to deny you..."
"Hee," Eiji said, already hopping lightly onto the cot and climbing in under the covers to snuggle with his roommate, "Mariko-sensei's heels can be heard from two hallways away. I'll just go out the window, nya, there's a lovely tree outside."
Oishi only smiled at Eiji, his arms wrapping around his waist in a relatively-loose hug. "Thought so, and thank you Eiji... Have sweet dreams, roomie," he replied, closing his eyes very slowly and falling asleep again. There were still things in his life that needed clearing and reassurance, but having Eiji by his side was already a big plus and something that gave him some extra strength and push to keep on going...
Snuggling close, Eiji slipped an arm around Oishi's waist and cuddled into the hug. "Good night, Oishi," he said, pulling at the sleepy cloud and using it to help both himself and Oishi fall asleep. "Sweet dreams ... nya ..."
The two boys were soon asleep, cuddling together on the cot, Eiji curled up against Oishi as the other boy held him in a loose hug.
