Summary: Tezuka visits Oishi to discuss the team's health.

Carrying both his notebook and a clipboard under his arm, the captain of Seigaku leisurely took his time in walking to his vice-captain's dwelling. He had too many thoughts on his mind to walk any slower or faster, and he was for once in his life unsure on how to work the listings for upcoming matches.. "..two players are out of the game for a while.. and we're short one." muttered the cinnamon haired boy as he paused once upon reaching the frontdoor of his friend. Tezuka raised a hand, bringing his knuckles against the wood, "I hope he isn't busy."

Looking up from his schoolwork at the table, Oishi wondered who could be coming over. He wasn't expecting any visitors this afternoon, but he stood and walked to the door anyway. Opening it, he smiled in pleased surprise upon seeing his buchou. "Tezuka! This is a nice surprise. Come in!"

Tezuka bowed his head, closing his eyes and stepping into the entry way. "I am sorry for interrupting you, Oishi. But it was important that I speak with you before making a final decision." What final decision? Leaning down and removing his shoes quickly, he stood straight and looked to his friend. "Did I interrupt anything?"

"No, not at all, I was just studying a bit," Oishi said, stepping back and gesturing for Tezuka to follow him into the living room. "What final decision?" he asked curiously, his brow creasing a bit in concern. That sounded very serious.

Pulling the clipboard from beneath his arm and moving to lay the notebook on the table nearby, Tezuka sighed, "We're short a player. I am unsure of who to play twice in our matches, Oishi. It is important we pick someone with stamina."

Oishi nodded, sitting down on the couch and indicating that Tezuka should take a seat. "That's a difficult situation, I know," he sighed, rubbing at his forehead. The injuries to Ryoma and Fuji had been weighing on his mind, and he knew it had been worrying the captain as well. "I... don't think I could play two matches, with my injuries," he said reluctantly, looking down at his still-bandaged arms and hands. "I should be healed enough to play one, but two might be stretching things, especially if I were trying to play singles. At least Eiji wasn't hurt," he added. "So we'll have a strong doubles one, at least." He paused, biting his lower lip. "Perhaps Takashi or Kaidoh could do it?" he mused. "Or, should we temporarily move up one of the non-regulars? Arai is getting fairly good."

Tezuka moved to sit, crossing his arms and sighing. "Echizen's injuries are by far the worst among ours. Fuji's and yours following. I think with a little time Fuji would be able to play, but at the moment we need someone now." he said, looking over at his friend with a brow arched. "I could play two matches, Singles only. Eiji and you are our Doubles one, doubles two is reserved for Momoshiro and Kaidoh. Singles one, myself. Singles three, Kawamura. But.. it's singles two that worries me."

Oishi shook his head vehemently at Tezuka's suggestion. "There's no way you could play two matches, Tezuka," he said firmly. "With your shoulder and elbow... you're not supposed to play long matches anyway, let alone two in a row."

"We don't really have a choice right now, Oishi." he said, looking up. "Dare I suggest we slip Inui into one of the doubles or singles slots?" he asked, sighing. "I'm wary of letting even you play one set."

Oishi blinked, confused a moment. "Wow. I forgot all about Inui..." How had he managed to forget the data-player. "Why are we worried then? He can play Singles 2, and we're all set."
O
Tezuka sighed, reaching for his notebook and pulling it open. He drew a pen from his pocket, scribbling down Inui's name onto his own roster listing. "..I am worried still."

Shaking his head, Oishi reached out to place his hand on Tezuka's shoulder. "Don't worry, Tezuka. My cuts will heal soon, and I should be ready to play in our next match. I've been keeping up with running and other training, so I won't get out of shape." He laughed. "Here we were worrying about this too much... as long as we don't have any more injuries, we're covered. Arai can be our sub for the next match, and everything will be fine."

"I'm no longer worrying over our listings. Not as much as I am for recovery for our members." he replied, looking back to Oishi. "Fuji seems to be coming along well, and from what I hear from Fuji about Echizen... Echizen is rushing his own recovery."

That was bad news. Oishi frowned, his brow furrowing as he pondered this. "He shouldn't rush... that will only make things worse in the long run," he said. "Maybe you should talk to him, Tezuka? You have experience with waiting for major injuries to heal." He sighed. "I don't know if he'd listen to anyone else."

Tezuka shook his head, "I seriously doubt he'd listen to me about an injury. Apparently all he's doing right now is getting up and walking around on his crutches, taking walks in the evenings, and while at home walking without his crutches." He sighed, shaking his head, "It concerns me."

Oishi rubbed his forehead, sighing again. "That sounds like Echizen... but he's going to hurt himself more if he pushes things. We need to assure him that we'll be all right without him playing, for now." He thought a moment, then added, "Maybe we can get Inui to devise a special training menu he can do without injuring himself?"

Tezuka nodded, "Perhaps he'll be so kind as to set up a punishment system for Echizen should the boy not do it probably." Looking over to Oishi, he tilted his head, "For now, it'll be myself, Inui, Kawamura, Doubles one, and Doubles two playing. At least until Fuji and Echizen get well again."

"That sounds right," Oishi said, looking down at his own hand and flexing his fingers. He'd be all right... he had to be well in time for the tournament. There was no other option... he couldn't risk either Fuji or Echizen hurting themselves worse. "We'll be all right, Tezuka," he said with a smile, looking back up at the captain. "Seigaku is strong... we'll get through this."

"We have time before the tournament. We can rest and heal up for our matches. I'll have practice canceled for the next few days as well, so everyone can use this time to rest." he explained, nodding. "How does that sound, fukubuchou?'

"Sounds good," Oishi said with a smile. "Maybe we should just have light practices, though... wouldn't want everyone to fall out of shape and risk further injury, you know?"

"Light practice.. I am concerned that Echizen will make an attempt to come watch.." he murmured, frowning. "In any case, I will cancel morning practices and we'll have light afternoon practices."

"If he only watches, that would be all right," Oishi mused. "We don't want to make him feel cut off from the team just because he is injured, right?" He smiled at Tezuka. "Even you watched practice when your shoulder was hurt."

"It's not like I cut him out from our team, I simply instructed him to stay home and rest. If he's up and around all the time, his leg won't heal properly." he said in rebuttle, closing hazel eyes. "And even though I watched practice, my wound was with my shoulder.. not my leg."

Oishi sighed, shaking his head. "It wouldn't be too hard for us to get him a chair. I just don't want him to feel left out," he argued gently. He hated to disagree with his captain, but he only wanted what was best for the team. "But whatever you decide is fine."

Tezuka heaved a sigh in defeat, he could never seem to win against Oishi's soft arguements, "I'll allow Echizen to join our practices. But he'll be forced to sit down on the bench and only move when necessary."

Oishi smiled, glad that Tezuka had agreed. "I think that's a good idea," he said, then took a deep breath. "I hope we all heal quickly... I can't help but worry, you know."

"I'm thankful that only a few us got away with injuries.." he murmured, sighing again. "If anyone had died or more persons had been injured.. it might have taken quite a toll on our team."

Oishi nodded, shivering a little at the thought. "Yes... we can all be grateful that no one was hurt more seriously than this, nor any of our families killed or injured," he said quietly. It hurt just to think about that, and he took a deep breath. "I will do what I can to help those hurt."

"That would be most helpful, Oishi. If you would help." he said, nodding. "I have tried to help Fuji, but I am not doing a very good job.. Echizen seems to be making an impact however."

Oishi nodded, knowing a bit about what had gone on between Fuji and Echizen. "Hopefully those two will be able to help one another," he replied. "And you can always come to me if you need anything, you know that."

"I know I can come to you. I have no doubt in that." he replied, looking to Oishi. "Aah, I have yet to ask.. how rude of me. How are you and Kikumaru? I've been worried."

"Nothing to worry about," Oishi replied, the thought of his hyperactive partner bringing a smile to his face. "We're doing fine... very well, actually. My only concern is... well, sometimes Eiji can be a little... over-affectionate in public."

"And? Is that such a bad thing? Open affection?" he asked, tilting his head in question and giving his vice-captain a hard stare.

Oishi coughed and rubbed the back of his head self-consciously. "Well... I-I'm not sure if I want too many other people to know," he said. "I don't know how the team would react, and... there are some hateful people out there. I don't want Eiji to get hurt, or have any prejudice against him for being... well, you know."

"For him being homosexual? I don't see why that's such a bad thing.." he murmured, closing his eyes. "Sure, it may not be openly accepted.. but I think it would give you both a sense of security in knowing you had no fear to show how much you loved each other."

"Maybe..." Oishi said hesitantly, picking some fuzz off the edge of the couch. "I just... don't know if the good would outweigh the bad. And I show him how much I love him when we're... alone," he added with a blush.

"Well, that's good. I'm glad." said Tezuka softly, nodding his head in approval of some sorts. "Aah, that clipboard is yours to keep. It has your copy of the roster."

"Thank you," Oishi said earnestly. "And not just for the clipboard... you helped me out with Eiji before, for which I'm grateful." He smiled. "I'll be sure to ask you if I need any more advice, okay?"

"Please do. I'd be more than willing to share." he said, pulling himself to his feet. "In the meantime, Oishi, do try to rest up and take care of yourself. It is important you get well deserved rest, too. And you need to heal also."

Oishi nodded, standing to walk Tezuka to the door. "I will, don't worry," he said. "Thank you for stopping by today."
