Yukimura had insisted upon it.

"Sanada," he'd said, voice soft and quiet and inexplicably threatening in the way that only Yukimura's voice could be, "you and Kirihara-kun need to stop what you're doing right now."

Sanada stood glaring at Kirihara, two seconds away from exploding with righteous anger. He gripped his racket in his right hand tightly, imagining that the grip was Kirihara's neck. It helped.

"We're not doing anything," Sanada said, not taking his eyes away from Kirihara.

Kirihara just grinned and scratched the back of his neck, trying to hide his discomfort and failing. "Right, right. Sorry about that, Sanada-san…"

Sanada could practically feel his blood boiling. "You served that ball at my-"

"Enough."

One word from Yukimura ended it before it even began. Both Sanada and Kirihara stopped glaring at each other and instead turned to their captain.

"The two of you need to learn to get along. Kirihara-kun is close to everyone on the team, minus you, Sanada-"

"That probably has something to do with the fact that he's insufferable," interrupted Sanada.

Yukimura gave him an unforgiving sort of look. Sanada shut his mouth.

"As I was saying," continued Yukimura, this time turning to Kirihara and resting a friendly hand on his shoulder, "the two of you will learn to get along, and you will do so by our next match, have I made myself clear?"

Kirihara nodded, "Yes, sir!"

Sanada wanted to off himself, but he still replied with a curt but honest, "Yes."

Sanada received a phone call while practicing his kendo later that night. Naturally, he allowed his mother to answer it, but when she called his name, he sighed deeply and set down his katana.

"Hello?" he asked, upon picking up the phone.

"Hey, Sanada-san, what's up?" It was Kirihara.

"Not much, but your call just interrupted my kendo practice," Sanada said, attempting to inflict a bit of anger into that statement without sounding completely rude.

"Haha, oops? Anyway, I've been thinking of what Yukimura-buchou said and I dunno about you, but I like video games, so…"

There was a pause, probably Kirihara's way of implying that Sanada should already know where, exactly, Kirihara's train of thought was heading.

Sanada didn't.

"So… what?"

There was some shuffling from the other end of the line. "So, I dunno… haha… um… we can go to the arcade?"

Sanada blinked once. He didn't like arcade games. He remembered playing Pac-Man as a child and damn those ghosts, but they always seemed to catch him, but never his brother. He'd sworn off video games ever since, having been convinced that he couldn't win at them and that they were a waste of time.

Yukimura wanted him to get along better with Kirihara, though, who was irritating, to say the least. And apparently, Kirihara enjoyed video games and hanging out at the arcade.

"Fine," he replied, his tone icy. "Tomorrow after practice, then."

He barely waited long enough to hear Kirihara's, "All right, see you!" before hanging up.

"Kirihara says you're going to the arcade with him this afternoon. Is that right, Sanada?" Yukimura asked the next day. They had just finished dressing for practice, but Yukimura was busy absent-mindedly shuffling through sheets of paper of detailed information on line-ups and opposing teams. Sanada wondered why he didn't just invest in a binder to put them in, complete with labeled sections to make things more organized, but he wasn't captain, and therefore was not responsible for such things.

"That's correct," Sanada replied.

"Hm," said Yukimura. He fished out a single sheet of paper from his mess of a pile and handed it to Sanada, grinning. "Have fun, then!"

The paper was a computer print-out of a map. It showed the way to the closest video arcade, apparently about five blocks from Rikkai Dai.

Sanada frowned and said nothing.

Sanada was glad for Yukimura's foresight, however, when Kirihara asked after practice, "So do you know where we're going, Sanada-san?"

He was able to reply honestly, "Yes," and lead his bratty and annoying kouhai to the arcade. That most of the walk there was spent in silence was more of a relief to Sanada than anything else - anything Kirihara asked was a yes or no question, and beyond "yes" and "no", Sanada did not feel compelled to contribute anything to the conversation, which of course eventually fizzled out.

When they arrived, Sanada even went so far as to pay for their tokens. When Kirihara gave him an odd look, Sanada replied simply with, "Senpai's treat."

"Oh yeah? What if I wanna play every game here twenty times? Or if I decide I wanna beat all of Tekken? 'Cause that'll cost a lot, and I think I only brought a couple hundred yen, Sanada-san…"

Sanada took the handful of ten tokens and promptly gave five to Kirihara. "Too bad."

Kirihara pouted. Sanada ignored him.

At Kirihara's insistence, the first game they tried was Tekken. Sanada got his pixilated ass handed to him on a plate several times by Kirihara before his kouhai laughed and said, "No, just pound on the controls randomly - that's how I do it."

Sanada failed to see how this would help his game-play until… it helped his game-play. Eventually, he took a fight from Kirihara and the younger boy was patting him on the back in congratulations.

"Again," Sanada found himself saying. It was the first time he had won at a video game, and even he couldn't hide the fact that he was moderately thrilled. He put another token in and Kirihara did the same.

Sanada practically pounded on the buttons, keeping close watch on his character's health bar, as well as Kirihara's. Just as Sanada was about to lose, however…

"Whoa! Sanada-san, what the hell was that? I've never even seen that move before!"

Kirihara's character had been kicked and punched approximately twenty times all in the same mid-air jump - quite the impressive KO, if Sanada allowed himself to brag. And he did.

"Haven't you? I've seen it practically every time I play, uh…" Sanada stood back for a moment to examine the name of the game they were playing. "Uh, every time I play Tekken 4. Pity."

Kirihara snickered a little and placed in another token. "Yeah right, Sanada-san. I'll get you yet!"

"Bring it on, Kirihara," said Sanada, a smirk of his own beginning to form.

Maybe video games had some value after all, Sanada thought as his character kicked Kirihara's in the face three times. They were awfully good at relieving stress and beating up annoying little kouhais without actually beating up annoying little kouhais.

Wait until he told Yukimura. Or rather, wait until he challenged Yukimura.

The text on the screen read, "One hit KO!"
