Miyuki found herself at the tennis courts doing a bit of wall practice so she wouldn’t get rusty. She wasn’t going to let herself be too wrapped up in the sport during such a nice vacation but at the same time she couldn’t pass up a bit of practice either. Though she didn’t really have any sort of practice partner but she wasn’t going to let that get her down. It was vacation after all and she’d have plenty of time to spend it with everyone else and just as much more time when school started again to play more. Besides it had only just started; maybe in a day or two she’d be able to relax as much as it seemed everyone else was doing. But she just couldn’t sit still in the nice weather there and it had been a while since she was able to play tennis outside so what better chance than in the Bahamas!
In the middle of her thoughts she lost concentration and ended up hitting the wall to hard and high sending a ball flying out of the court area. “Oops...” she paused and felt a little embarrassed spacing off like that and was glad no one was around to see now.
Vacation had been quite a welcome to Yagyuu so far, finding the relaxation from his vigorous studies quite appealing. He was lucky in a way, transferring schools right before being whisked off to a tropical paradise. Rushed yes, but not unwanted. Usually he would be found at the hotel's lobby, enjoying whatever book at the time. But unfortunately, today it seemed a tourist bus had piled, the hustle and bustle of people murmuring all too much for him. Today though, he would find solace in the tennis courts. It had been quite some time since he had last held a racket, the glamorous study of medicine had not allowed him as much free time as he had liked, but it was why he transferred to this school in the first place.
He sighed, stopping abruptly as a tennis ball landed close by -- a bit too close for comfort really. "...." Yagyuu bent to pick up the ball. Apparently someone had the same idea as him today, he thought whilst approaching the court. Gaze landed on an unfamiliar female figure, he assumed the stray ball was hers. "Excuse me."
Just as Miyuki was preparing to grab another ball she blinked and looked up as she heard a voice. “Yeah, what is it?” she called back none too politely since she had been caught off guard and was thinking it was just her brother or someone else close to her. She hadn’t paid too much attention to the voice to automatically identify it as someone she didn’t know until she looked over to the guy. Another little oops but she at least knew he was with their group since he spoke Japanese too.
“Who are you?” she questioned, tilting her head toward him a bit curiously as she lowered her racket and took her hand out of her pocket. Though she could tell he was with their big group she had little idea of who he was since she had never really seen him before. The girl couldn’t help keep on guard whenever she met someone older there too considering the bullies she had encountered.
“Ah, I’m sorry to bother you miss.” He said in his own polite manner, disregarding her rather rough tone. Not that he cared much either way, nor did he intend to. Yagyuu just wanted to give back the ball that had almost annihilated him earlier.
He eyed at her with his own curiosity, noting that she was indeed part of their grouped vacation. Though who she was exactly he had no idea. “Forgive me if I startled you, I am also part of the Tennis Academy. Yagyuu Hiroshi.” He introduced himself, bowing courteously as so. “I suppose this is yours?” He extended the ball towards the guarded girl, half wondering if she would smack him with her tennis racket.
“Oh...” Miyuki blinked, moving from her slightly testy stance into a more relaxed one. Maybe she didn’t have to be on guard around the guy, he didn’t seem like a bully with the way he was asking. And normally people older than her didn’t bow on introduction either since she was younger. “Thanks.” she nodded as she reached back to take the tennis ball and bowed a little too.
She sized him up a bit herself as one last precaution but as soon as the ball was back in her other pocket she relaxed. “Chitose Miyuki, but you probably have only heard of my brother.” she responded, considerably more polite than when he had first approached but probably not as much as she should have been. “Don’t think I’ve heard of you or seen you around before, are you new?” Miyuki couldn’t help asking as she rested her racket on her shoulder while she looked up at him to speak.
Yagyuu was a gentleman through and through, he didn’t much mind when it came to ages and the proper bowing measure. He simply did it out of politeness, more so to a female -- regardless of her rough nature. There was a persona he had to keep up after all. He was thankful that the tennis racket smack never followed once the ball was taken from him.
He nodded in response, vaguely remembering someone of the name Chitose. “I’ve just transferred over to the Academy, so I doubt you’d know me.” Yagyuu wasn’t exactly known for his oh-so-outgoing personality either. “I apologize if I startled you earlier, the ball just happened to land by me during my walk here.” He figured he’d leave out the part where it almost nicked him. “Figured I’d return it since I was already on my way to the courts.”
She couldn’t say that really surprised her. It seemed like a lot of people were transferring in just before the break so she could only imagine more appearing after. It seemed like a weird time to transfer but then again she had shown up at a strange time as well. “Guess you got lucky then with a big vacation like this.” she smirked, still a bit on guard but feeling more like she could
loosen up around him. He seemed a bit stiff it made her want to loosen him up actually-- just like with Tezuka sometimes.
“You mean you came to play?” she blinked, a bit shocked to hear that of all things. It only made sense he played tennis since he had gone to the trouble of transferring but lately it felt rare to be able to catch anyone for a game; especially on a vacation like that.
"In a sense I guess I was lucky." By far did he mind the well needed vacation, but everything had felt more rushed than he would've liked. He had barely made it into the school before he found himself back on a plane, yet to even find out his rooming assignment back at the Academy. But he would deal with that upon return.
"Mm, the hotel's lobby was too crowded for my liking today." Yagyuu said, hearing the barely audible shock in her question, figuring she thought it was rare he felt the need to play while on vacation. "Figured I'd come out to stretch my limbs and in turn get some sun."
She felt a little pout on her lips at that. “Oh, so you’re not here to play tennis then...” Since he definitely made it sound like he wasn’t interested to her and just had strolled by. “Well, sorry for hitting my ball in your way, I’ll be careful next time.” Miyuki added, her head hanging a little lower as she turned to return to her wall practice.
The girl had been trying to learn to restrain herself from getting too excited and dragging others into playing her. She had far too many bad experiences than good whenever she had in the past considering after all. Though she was excited to learn this new guy, Yagyuu, might have wanted to play too. All apart of her young and slightly hyper nature to come to conclusions before allowing explanation after all~
Yagyuu couldn't help but observe the girl's obvious disappointment, from her head hung low to the tone laced in her voice as she spoke. Had she been eager to find someone to play against? Unfortunate though, as he had indeed come to the tennis courts for mere observation today. Call it, relief from the mosh of people clammed inside the hotel.
He sighed, eyeing the girl's back as she began to walk away. Curse his natural instinct to appease. "You know..." He said, shifting his gaze over to the unoccupied nets. "If I had brought my racket with me, I would of gladly have played a match with you." Unless of course she had a spare with her.
That was plenty to immediately perk the girl back up again. “Really?” If that was all he needed well she had brought a spare actually. “I have another racket.” she chimed, turning back to him with a renewed hope. Though she didn’t let herself get too worked up this time either; or was trying really hard to but the twinkle in her eyes said otherwise. “I mean... if you want to play with me.” He seemed like a nice enough guy but she was just a kid to him probably and a girl too so she couldn’t help wonder if he would want to for real or was just being nice.
A part of him was disappointed in the fact that she had actually brought a spare with her, the offer more out of politeness than anything else. He could, of course, just say no...but her odd perkiness tugged at him. He would rather not deal with any unhappy pouts that would follow if he declined. "Ah." Yagyuu said, striding over to the girl in order to meet her gaze. "If you are fine with having me, then it would be my pleasure." Politeness at it’s best.
Miyuki still felt a bit skeptical about the offer but her enthusiasm overshadowed those thoughts as she nodded to him. “Okay!” she cheered as she rushed to go grab her extra racket for him. In no time she had returned with it and handed it to him; she was glad it was a generic one instead of the custom made one she used or else it would have been far too small for his grip. She then waited expectantly for him to join her on the court, figuring he wanted her to serve since she had sort of dragged him into playing. How long they would actually play... she would leave that up to him. As much as she wanted to play a lot she knew expecting an entire game from him out of nowhere was probably a bit rude-- and he had been so polite to her so far she couldn’t take anymore advantage of that. (Even though she kind of already was...)
"Thank you." He said, taking the racket offered to him. He flipped it around in his grip a few times, the feel of it quite awkward in his hand. It had been a while since he had last played, though he doubted his skills had deteriorated. At least not too terribly. Yagyuu could almost feel her eagerness as he stepped onto the opposite court, finding himself suddenly overcome with a bit of anxiety. “I’m ready whenever you are.” He called out to her, readying himself into position, thankful she had chosen to serve first.
Miyuki got in position and made one last check to make sure he was ready for her serve. She wanted to take things a bit slow in case he hadn’t played for a while since she remembered that happened to a lot of people at the school too. Lots of them used to play a lot when they were her age but stopped or took a break like some of her nii-chan-tachi. Though they were always still really good but best to test the waters first. “Here it comes~” she declared as she hit a fairly easy serve to him. She’d take the time to feel him out and herself on the court as well-- it wasn’t exactly like she got many matches all the time either.
The whole thing had a sense of nostalgia to it, anticipating one’s serve, sizing up the other’s play style -- it had been too long. Thought that was his reasoning for transferring to this Academy in the first place, he had grown tired of focusing so much on his studies without the time to play the sport he had come to enjoy throughout his life. Yagyuu returned the ball with ease, noting the lightness of the serve. Perhaps she felt the need to take it easy on him?
She felt a little bad noticing how easy she had made the serve but she couldn’t have been too sure about him since they had never met. But from his easy return she decided she could maybe pick things up a bit. Steadily she tried to pick up the pace in the rally but not enough that they couldn’t perhaps talk. If he was a really good player she hoped he would speak up so she wouldn’t bore him. “Do you play a lot?” she called out as she sent the ball back to him.
He was thankful for the pace pick up in their rally, though unsure at how to go about his returns each time. Was this her tennis or was she simply holding back? He would test it out a bit more before going at it seriously -- or maybe she would turn the tables on him soon. Yagyuu eyed at her from across the courts, surprised to have heard her despite being drowned in his own thoughts. "Not as often as I'd like." He said, returning the ball to the side opposite of her current position. “What about yourself?”
Miyuki still hadn’t really come into her own to figure out her own tennis-- she simply played because she loved playing. And getting to play with others always made it that much more enjoyable. Deciding he could probably keep up she sped the pace up and added a bit more force to her return. The rally had been going on a little while but she was curious if he was more determined to take the point or not. “Well you’ll get to play more now.” she smiled as she returned. “I play whenever I can ‘cause it’s fun~”
It seemed like she had decided to pick up the pace against him, though he wondered about the length of their rally. Should he try for a point or let her have the first go. "Ah. Though you are my first opponent in quite some time." Yagyuu said over the sounds of their sneakers rubbing against the court's floor. He may have not played in a while, but his body still remembered everything perfectly. Perhaps he would try that again -- no, no. Not yet at least. He returned the ball with more force, finding he had nothing to reply to her last sentence.
Well if he wasn’t going to go for it after all that time then Miyuki took her chance and knocked the ball back fast and heavy where she saw an opening. He was pretty polite even on the court while playing and she couldn’t wondering if that was some sort of play style but figured he was just getting used to things again. Either way it was nice to have someone to play with since she had been planning on spending her time there just practicing alone. “Well I hope I can challenge you a bit.” Miyuki chimed back to him.
Yagyuu caught the shift in her positioning just in time to meet the ball with his racket, slightly surprised at the force behind it once he had returned it. Indeed, she had been holding back on him after all. Though it was kind of her to take into consideration his time off the courts. Perhaps he would try a bit more seriously now. "You don't need to hold back." He said, amused to find himself almost enjoying this after he had dreaded playing against her only moments ago.
She couldn’t help grin as the ball was returned to her. So he was getting the hang of things again and definitely had to be good to pick up so fast and keep up with her changing the pace as she had. “Then the same goes to you!” she called as she made another shot to try and best him. It was faster and stronger than the last by a considerable margin. Miyuki wanted to see just how good a player Yagyuu still was now, incredibly happy that he had decided to play her since she was getting some serious practice.
Yagyuu couldn't help the grin that appeared on his usually stern features at the sight of her return. It had power and in turn speed but best of all it was just right for that. "I won't go easy on you." He called back to her response, racket hitting against the ball with noticeable power, sending it flying down the center court with surprising speed. How long had it been since he had last hit this shot? His signature, "Laser Beam."
The ball had shot by her so fast she almost hadn’t seen it. Blinking, she finally saw where it had ended up as he took the first point and her eyes widened a little. “I’ve never seen anything like that before.” she smiled back to him, quite impressed and equally excited. New moves were always fun and she never really got upset losing points to them since it gave her the chance to see something new. Sort of a problem if she was supposed to play seriously but back home there weren’t as many talented players who would change things up like everyone did there. Perhaps that was because it was a mix of people from all over but getting to play boys helped too. She wouldn’t let that deter her from playing though, she had a trick or two as well. “Now it’s getting fun~” she cheered as she served for real.
"Ah, I haven't used that in a long time." He eyed his racket with amusement, almost surprised at how easily his body remembered such a move. Though he hadn't been on a court in some time, he had never slacked off physically. Whatever small time he had in between studying and exams he would fill with fitness -- unless he was golfing of course, but even then that had merits. Yagyuu readied himself once they had their small verbal exchange, figuring she would come at him seriously now. “Ah.” was his simple response, returning her serve with an odd sense of...excitement? Was he having fun?
Miyuki sure was having fun, that was for sure. If he was having just as much and they got more serious well she didn’t think it was too far off for her to start using a few tricks of her own. But that would only really happen if she felt the need to be competitive and considering they were just on vacation and the match was a spur of the moment it would be a bit hard for her to push for that. For now she just kept trying to challenge the other more and aimed to score wherever she thought she could without exerting too much energy even though she was basically full of it.
Yagyuu had felt no competitive energy from her, but it was just as well for he found he was actually thankful for that. It had been far too long since he had last dove into a serious match and this was probably not the most appropriate of times nor did he feel the need to overpower the younger girl. That was not to say that he would take it easy on her either, she deserved to be played against with respect -- her tennis, afterall, was quite good. "You play well." He said, jumping across the court to return a ball that had almost escaped him, but he was too late to react and the hit was sloppy. It would most certainly be out.
She was having far too much fun to care about competing still anyway. So much that even a missed shot from him wasn’t something she called out. If it were against Kintarou she would have mocked him the whole game triumphantly but in the case of this match it meant little. Soon enough she’d stop keeping score as well-- not that she was planning on calling anything out anymore either. “I just like to play a lot~” she chimed back to him as a new point rally began. “It’s always been my favorite since I started playing with nii-chan.” Even if she had almost quit shortly after. But fate had it someone like Tezuka showed up to help her through her problems and she had continued to enjoy the sport since.
He was surprised at once he didn't hear her call out the missed shot, though in turn a bit more eased that she hadn't. If it had been in his earlier years of tennis it would of no doubt irked him to have missed such an easy ball -- but that was then and this was now. Yagyuu was just thankful to be participating in such a carefree match, finding the way his muscles remembered their movements quite ...relaxing? Yes, this was in a sense calming. No pressure from the opponent, no score to really keep and weather that anyone would love to have. So, yes. This was unwinding.
The match had dragged on for quite a while and despite things it didn’t feel like there would be a clear winner but it was plenty of fun. Though it wasn’t hard to tell when it felt like the game was winding down a little purely on how long it was they had played. As Yagyuu served to her she was on her last point needed to score if they had been keeping track. The rally had lasted a while but even she knew she was a little winded.
Just as he knocked it back to her court she felt that small rush of wanting to really score and that small desire filled her as she sent the feeling through her racket, sending it to his court. It was seemingly a shot back just like any they had in the rally but there was something different whether he picked up on it or not. Miyuki immediately noticed and watched as to him the ball connected with his racket only to disappear in his eyes: Kamikakushi.
Yagyuu prepared to return the shot with ease, lining it up with the gut of his racket -- but the hit never followed. There was no force against his grip, only empty hair and the 'plop' sound of a ball landing not too far behind him. Ah. So this was the infamous move. He wasn't at all disappointed to have missed it, rather would of been too overly surprised if he hadn't. "That's quite the shot, miss." 1 and 1, far from a complete game but he wondered just how much she had planned to play against him. "My eyes couldn't follow it at all." Yagyuu called out to her.
Miyuki had only planned to play a few rounds anyway but was considerably flustered after she let that slip. She hadn’t meant to at all it just sort of happened... “Um, sorry.” she called to him, not quite willing to lift up her racket to continue. The girl wouldn’t be able to exactly call it a fluke since it wasn’t; that was a move she knew by heart thanks to watching her brother all the time. There were quite a number of others she had learned from his friends and since she had been at the school but not many knew about them and she preferred it that way. She couldn’t really say why she did it was just nice sometimes to not be identified by them even if it proved she was more talented of a player than she appeared.
"There is no need to apologize, miss." Yagyuu noted her change in stance, assuming the way she held her racket was a sign that the match was indeed over. "It was a marvelous shot." He said as he made his way over to the middle of the court, extending a friendly open palm over the net. "We'll call this a tie game, then?" After having been so reluctant earlier, it was almost amusing at how he had come to enjoy their one set match.
She smiled as she saw him approach she joined him at the net to shake his hand vigorously. “Thanks, you can just call me Miyuki like everyone else does though.” she laughed a little. Being called miss so much was nice but it felt a little strange while playing tennis she had to admit. Whenever she played someone it felt like she was making a new friend after all even if it was more a rivalry sometimes than just fun. “And I’d say you probably would have won but okay.” It wasn’t often people more skilled than her settled for ties after all. Instead the games became a showcase for them to demonstrate to her or she just plain got dominated but it was a nice change of pace. “It was a lot of fun playing with you Yagyuu-san!”
"Then since it is alright by you, I will call you Miyuki." A polite smile curved his mouth as she spoke, and he shook his head, denying her statement. If it had been a serious match, then perhaps indeed he would of won, but this was not that. It was simply a game of introduction, both to her and to himself. "The probabilities don't matter, what does is that our short game did indeed end with a tie." Yagyuu retreated his hand after the vigorous shake, amused at the younger girl's energetic spirit. "It was a lot of fun playing with you as well, Miyuki-san."
