Carrying a box and a large bag full of clothing, Niou Masaharu inserted the key to his new room into the lock and looked around. Apparently at the moment his roommate wasn’t around at the moment. He sniffed the air, something nasty in the air. Of course, his new roommate had taken advantage of having the room to himself; there was really no where for Niou to put his things, other than on the floor.

Niou got busy putting away what he could, and inspecting his roommate’s possessions. “...I hope he’s not as weird as I’m thinking.”

Inui had just finished with his classes for the day, and was making his way back to his dorm room. He was tired; it had been a long day. All he wanted to do right now was relax in front of his computer and run some simulations with the new data he'd taken. He pulled his key from his pocket and shoved it home in the lock. He made sure to lock the door behind him after he'd enetered. He noticed the other teen immediately. He'd almost forgotten that he was supposed to get a roommate. "...Ah. Good afternoon."

Niou looked up from the floor. “Yo.” He greeted the other. “What’s up?” He asked, poking carefully around the room. “Got used to having the room to yourself, huh?”

His set his bag on the floor beside his bed and nodded. "I apologize for the mess. I'll clean this up."

“Nah, don’t worry about it right now.” Niou said. “Though I have to ask, what is that weird smell? I’m not sure what it is, and...well, it’s kind of funky.”

"I'm sure you'd like use of your side of the room." Inui moved to pull some of the things off of Niou's bed and placed them on his own. From under his own bed, he pulled out a few boxes and began packing some of the stuff away. He didn't need most of the stuff that was out, anyway. "I think you'd be better off not knowing, actually. There was a failed experiment."

Niou stared at him. Great, he was rooming with a mad scientist. “I...see.” He said cautiously, watching as Inui put his stuff away. “So...How often do you do these experiments?”

Inui paid no attention to the other teen as he packed his things away, making sure to take great caution with a few of them. The full flasks and beakers, he set on his desk for now. They'd have to be emptied. "That depends on how often I can procure...ah...materials." He flashed a sadistic smile over at Niou. "Is that going to be a problem?"

Niou was used to getting creepy looks from guys in glasses, but this seemed worse, somehow. He paused for a few moments. “Nope, not a problem.” Niou reassured him. Niou started making a mental list of things he would need, a gas mask being at the top...and possibly a biohazard suit.

"Good, good." He packs up the boxes and slid them back under his bed. "That should do it. I do apologize for the state of your bed. Perhaps if you flip the mattress...?" He made a mental note to write down Niou's reaction. It wasn't completely obvious, but it looked like there may have been the slightest hint of fear in those eyes.

Niou debated doing just that action. Perhaps that might help the cause of the disgusting smelling mattress...at least, for now. “I guess that might help.” He agreed, easily picking up the mattress and flipping it over. Niou sniffed the air lightly, testing to see if it still stunk. It wasn’t quite as bad, but it still lingered. “I guess that’s manageable for now.” Maybe spilling something better smelling on it would cancel out the original smell...or make it worse. Niou regretted not paying much attention in chemistry.

Inui doesn't bother to suppress his grin at seeing this. He did feel a little guilty about Niou having to sleep on that, but it amused him more than anything. "Tell me, Niou. Do you smoke?" He stood and brushed off his pants. Some of those bottles had been there for quite some time, unmoved.

Niou figured it would be fine for now. He’s probably sleep on top of his blankets anyway. Niou turned his head at the question. “Occasionally.” He answered. “Mostly when others are, or if I’m totally stress out. And...well, I’ll apologize in advance if I end up stinking up the place with it.” Niou wondered about that for a moment, then it dawned on him. “Oh, and outside. Don’t worry about anything exploding.”

Inui nodded. Smoking didn't bother him; he was just worried about things catching fire and/or blowing up. "I don't care if you smoke. It doesn't bother me." He paused. "I would prefer it if you did it outside. If only for our safety." His fingers moved to unbutton his shirt. It was stuffy in here, and he wanted to get comfortable. Roommate be damned. "I would especially avoid doing it in your bed," he says as he loses his shirt. His undershirt was much more breathable. "I would worry for your life."

Niou paused for a moment. “I’m glad to know that you care that much already.” He watched the brief not quite stripping. Under Inui’s undershirt he could see some rather defined muscles. He debated commenting on them or not. Damn He at least thought to himself.

"I didn't say all that." Inui flashed a quick grin. "Dealing with the paperwork that followed would be troublesome." He was, of course, teasing. He debated grabbing a t-shirt before deciding that, no, it was more comfortable without it.

Niou snorted. “Yeah, I didn’t think so.” He actually understood the teasing. It was kind of reassuring that he’d already adjusted his sense of humor. “Yeah, damn paperwork. I totally understand.” Niou finally had to say something. “You know...you’re pretty ripped for a skinny guy.”

He nodded. "I would, no doubt, be there for hours in questioning." He pulls his desk chair out and sat down, an eyebrow cocking at Niou's comment. "Oh? You think so?"

Niou shrugged. “It just looks weird on you skinny guys, that’s all. It’s not all bad though. It’s kind of hot, really.” He wasn’t going to lie, it was. Not to mention, they’d probably end up seeing more of each other’s bodies than either of them might like...then again, maybe they would like it. Niou got lost in that though for a few moments. He coughed. “I guess you’re thinking I’m either gay or weird right now.”

He really hadn't looked at Niou until he made that last comment. His eyes trailed over the other male. He definitely wasn't bad looking, Inui decided. He shook his head. "Not at all. Studies have proven that it's quite normal to experiment and question our sexuality at this age."

Niou snorted. “What do you do? Read random textbooks and shit for fun?” He wasn’t sure if he at the point of ‘experimenting’ or not. Just what he needed, a boring nerd that reads textbooks for fun as a roommate. This was going to be an interesting experience.

Inui just cocked an eyebrow. "In fact...yes. I do have other hobbies, though." He shifted in his chair so that he was straddling the seat and facing the back. "If I recall correctly, your best subject is math, and you enjoy gun-shooting games." He smirked at the other, confident in his memory.

“Anyone could have told you about the games. I suppose Yanagi probably told you about the math.” Niou shrugged. “And just what does this random useless knowledge of me have to do with anything?”

"It tells me a lot more than you would think." He leaned forward and folded his arms over the chair's back. "Being skilled with numbers and formulas tells me that you're a logical thinker. This says a lot about your character and the type of decisions you'll be inclined to make. Having skill in gun-shooting games says that your reflexes are probably quite good. If I apply all of this to tennis and add in the fact that you seem to be fairly inteeligent, it tells me that you might make a formidable opponent." All of this is said in a very casual tone, as if it were perfectly normal to make these conclusions.

Niou stared at him for a moment, trying to process this. “Of course I’m a formidable opponent.” Niou grinned. “I went to Rikkai.” He stuck his tongue out. There was the whole old school pride hanging around. “Though I can prove that to you if you’d like me to.” Niou grinned. He hadn’t brought his racket along for nothing. “You’re one of those ‘data tennis’ guys, aren’t you? I vaguely remember that.” Niou never really paid much attention to his opponents, unless he knew there was something that could work against them before hand.

Inui chuckled. "Indeed." If they were able to have this casual of a conversation this easily, then perhaps rooming with Niou wouldn't be such a bad thing. "I will take you up on that sometime. I'd enjoy collecting data on you." He sat up, his arms still resting on the chair. "I learned from...'one of your own,' you know."

“Name the time and place.” Niou told him. “Though, good luck with the data collection. I can hide my data pretty well. And if you didn’t realize this...you suck at hiding identities.” Niou told him, rolling his eyes a bit. “Only Yanagi was the data player. Everyone else played sane tennis...well, most everyone else.”

"Will do." Inui grinned. "You seem to be mistaken. I wasn't trying to hide anything. I have a catalog of all the data players from the old tennis circuit. Only Renji was to Rikkai."

Niou shrugged. He didn’t really care about that. Who cared about those boring old data players...unless he was playing against one. Besides, in his own way, he could also be classified as a ‘data player,’ but he didn’t take it as seriously as those guys did. Niou stood up and stretched, his shirt riding up a bit. “Yeah, I think I’m going outside for a smoke. Want to come along?” Even though the topic had dropped, he was rather intrigued by this dorky, nerdy data freak.

Annoyingly enough, Inui's eyes shot to the bit of skin revealed with the stretching. He forced his eyes away from the scene and grabbed the hooded sweatshirt he always left hanging on his bedpost. "Sure." He'd started smoking back in America as an experiment, but stopped doing so on a regular basis. He still smoked a cigarette occasionally.

Niou caught that glance, and turned away to smirk about it. He grabbed his coat that he tended to leave his cigarettes and lighter in and pulled it on. “So, any idea what anyone else up here does for fun?” He asked as they got outside. Pulling out the box and his lighter, he offered one to Inui. “Want one?” He asked, not caring if he didn’t know whether or not Inui smoked.

He shook his head. "I've only been here about a month, myself. The time so far has been spent catching up with old friends and adjusting to life at the university." Inui held out his hand and nodded his thanks. "I know there are cafés and other such places."

“I guess I can ask around then.” Niou said, lighting up, and handing the lighter over to Inui as he took a drag. “So far, it sounds totally boring around here, but I suppose there’s the really fun things if you just look around in the right places.” Niou thought for a while. He should probably catch up with his old teammates. Maybe they’d have some good ideas. He hadn’t really come to party, but he really didn’t want to spend his entire time studying either.

"I'm sure the others would be able to tell you better than I would." He lit the cigarette and passed the lighter back to Niou, taking a long drag. He couldn't remember the last time he smoked. "What sorts of places are you looking for?"

“Clubs, I guess. Somewhere to shake the booty, you know.” Niou grinned at him. “Or a bar.” One of things Niou was sure about was that Inui didn’t know that he liked bar games, particularly darts. He was pretty good at it too. Niou shrugged a bit. “As long as there’s somewhere to get away from studying, I’ll be happy.”

Inui cocked an eyebrow at the wording, but didn't otherwise say anything. "Ah. I haven't heard of either. I know of a few decent restaurants in the area, but no bars or clubs." But it wasn't as if he'd gone around and explored much yet. He'd been busy. He took another drag on his cigarette. "I'm sure that there is something along those lines."

“I guess I’ll survive without. Or go to Tokyo on the weekends or something.” Niou said, flicking some ashes off and taking another drag. “There is a whole city nearby though, I’m sure it can’t be too horribly boring.”

"That's not to say that bars and clubs don't exist," Inui reminded him. "It means that I haven't heard of any." He glanced up at the sky as he puffed smoke out. It looked like it would rain tonight. "There should be something."

“True.” Niou agreed, looking up as well. Yeah, it might right. “I usually like cold weather, but this is a bit too cold for me.” He said, stuffing his hands in his pockets. “It’s probably going to do more than rain.” Niou predicted. “Too damned cold for it to not freeze.” He said, pulling a hand out for one last drag off his cigarette and snuffed it out on the ground.

"I don't mind it myself," Inui kept the conversation going. "The snow, however, I do mind. It makes training a bit...difficult." He puffed a bit more on his, drawing out and savoring the taste. He wished he knew how to make the smoke rings he'd seen other people do. He understood the logic, but just couldn't seem to be able to do them. Eventually, he, too, tossed the butt to the ground before grinding it with the toe of his shoe.

“I thought there were some indoor facilities here. Though I guess if you prefer the fresh air, it’s annoying.” Niou agreed. He chuckled a little. “My mom hates snow.” He commented randomly. “I love it occasionally.” Niou grinned. “Used to have snowball fights with my brother.”

"There are, but as you said, I prefer the outdoors." He glanced at the other teen. "You also have a sister, correct? It must be nice to play in the snow with siblings." His expression takes on a wistful note.

Niou nodded in answer. “Yeah, sis wasn’t much on playing with us boys though. We were too rough for her.” He said, noticing the expression. “Only child, huh?” He’d seen that expression on a few people in his life that he’d mentioned having siblings to.

"I can understand that." Inui nodded. "Only child, yes." He was surprised that Niou didn't seem at all fazed that Inui remembered this information about him

Niou wasn’t fazed at all. It’s not like it was some huge secret. Niou grinned at him. “At least you didn’t have classic middle child syndrome.” Niou said, heading back inside. “I think it was only too obvious with me.” He commented.

He folowed the silver-haired teen back inside with a slight hint of regret. "Oh?" He made a mental note to add this to his data. "That's interesting."

Niou shrugged. “Not really.” He said, snorting. “I think anyone that had a basic understanding of psychology would have figured that out. Besides, I once got called on it in junior high. In my book, any attention was better than none.”

"You would be surprised at what people aren't able to figure out, Niou." Honestly, he'd forgotten that Niou was a middle child. He'd even forgotten the other teen had siblings until his younger brother was mentioned. "Even common sense doesn't seem all that common anymore."

Niou looked at him. “Yeah, I guess you have a point.” He admitted. Niou smirked a little. “If I remember right, don’t you get easily flustered by Yanagi?”

Surprise was evident in his features. "Renji?" He fought to force his face blank. "I don't know what you mean." He took out his cell phone and pretended to check a message. It was something to distract him from the conversation at hand.

Niou raised an eyebrow, but decided to let that subject drop. He knew he’d hit a nerve. “Of course not.” He paused a moment before they entered their shared room again. “I think this might work out alright, don’t you?” It was strange to fall in to such an easy going rhythm with a new roommate.

Inui was grateful that Niou didn't press the matter further. His friendship with Renji confused him; he didn't want to talk about that with someone who was virtually a stranger. His phone was slipped back into his pocket, and he nodded at his new roommate. "I think it may."
