Comments: Well, here's the non-violent confrontation (sorry to disappoint you :P). Also, comments are welcome.
It seemed as if the day would never end. Renji was exhausted mentally by the end of his class, and it wasn’t just from focusing on the lecture. His personal life had been tossed around like a salad, and he had ended up being a piece of lettuce on the bottom of the bowl.
Trudging back towards his apartment, where he was in the midst of packing, he noticed a group of high school second years that were taking a tour of the campus. Among them was someone Renji recognized. He’d never approached or spoken to him before, but he still knew who he was. He approached him, and tapped him on the shoulder.
Satoshi's heart just wasn't in it. The tour was stupid. The class was stupid. Okay, so everyone from class wasn't here, but a few of the guys. Said he should get away from Echizen before 'he got sick too'. And he objected, of course, but he didn't want to be close to Tomoka, didn't know what to say, so he allowed them to drag him with. And he hated every second of it. As someone tapped him on the shoulder, he half hoped it was one of his senpai, Tezuka or someone else, and he stopped, turning around. The smile died on his lips as he noticed who it really was. "... Ya--yanagi-san...?" His eyes shifted, scanning the area, as if to make sure Sanada wasn't lurking about somewhere.
Renji just nodded. “Could I perhaps talk to you?” He asked, no hint of anger or bitterness in his voice. Then again, he rarely had eny emotions come through in his voice. He really hoped to get the other side of the story that had made Tomoka break down and confuse him as well as herself. “Don’t worry, Genichirou isn’t here.” He reassured Horio, as if reading his mind.
"Oh." Satoshi gulped, nearly chocking on air for a moment and then forced himself to relax. "Okay. Uh. You know, I don't know my way around here or anything but uh... We should probably go somewhere." He paused. "You're not planning on poisoning me or something, right?"
Renji’s lips turned upwards in amusement, wondering why everyone thought that he was like his former best friend and wanted to poison them. “No.” He stated simply, indicating for Horio to follow him to the cafeteria. “It’s a short walk back to the high school, and I’ll give you directions to get back.” He promised.
"Thanks. Don't wanna go back with those guys, yeah?" Satoshi fell in next to Yanagi, glancing up at him every now and then, fidgeting nervously. He wasn't sure what to say, where to start... So to begin with, he guessed the smartest thing he could do was to keep his trap shut.
Once they arrived at the cafeteria, Renji led them to a table in the far back, and indicated for Horio to sit down as he hung his backback over the back of his own chair. Sitting down and facing each other was a bit unnerving, but curiousity always got the better of him. “What happened?” He asked simply. That was really all he wanted to know. And perhaps the ‘why?’, but he’d ask that later.
"I was an ass," the younger boy started, truthfully. "I kind of knew you were having a bit of trouble... And I... Uhm. Figured I'd tell her how I feel about her." It was strange that he managed to talk about it so easily. He had thought he'd be a lot more pressed for words. Especially in front of Yanagi. "Of course she didn't believe me. Heh. I wouldn't either if I was someone else. Or I'd throw up or something. I mean, who'd want to be checked out by me, right? Uh. Anyway. I kind of lost it a little so... So I kissed her. You know? To prove my point. And she ran off."
Renji sat there in silence for a few moments, processing the other’s words. He folded his hands together on top of the table. It was true he had been angry when he first found out, and now he was just scared that things weren’t going to work out yet again with someone. “So you basically gave in to your insecurities and performed an action that you felt was in the right, when really it wasn’t.” Renji stated.
Satoshi blinked. "Huh?" What exactly did Yanagi mean? His brain didn't follow. He gnawed thoughtfully on his lower lip for a moment, before nodding, reluctantly. "I... guess?"
Renji was amused by the younger man. He really shouldn’t be, but he was. “Perhaps I spoke too soon.” He admitted. “Perhaps you could tell me the deeper reason you did it....to simplify, why?”
Satoshi sipped on his cola, put the glass down and then shrugged. "Uh. Why? I love her."
Renji sat there, accepting that. He of course had feelings for Tomoka, but he wouldn’t call it love just yet. He felt they were still in the ‘testing the waters’ stage. “I don’t claim to be an expert on love and dating and such things, but...Are you completely certain of that?” That probably wasn’t the best question to ask, but he had.
This time, he couldn't help but smile. "Yeah. Positive. I mean... No one pisses me off like she does, but even the second I start yelling at her, I've already forgiven her. When she smiles I just want to find a way to keep that smile on her face forever and ever. And I think the worst thing about this whole mess is that she's feeling so confused and lost about everything, and I just made it worse, you know? I just hate that I had to be selfish like that. And... You know. Ruin things. I didn't want that, I really didn't."
‘Made it worse’ was an understatement. Renji looked down, somehow his expression managing to look a bit sadder. Horio spoke with such a passion about her. Renji....could not. She had a bright smile, and he enjoyed seeing it. He hadn’t had the chance to get to know her so much deeper than just superficial things. He wanted that chance though. Horio’s words had cut him like a dull knife. Was there really anything he could say to that?
"... Yanagi-san?" Something about the young man seemed... Well. Not so good. Even Satoshi could tell that much.
“Sorry” Renji said, shaking himself out of it. He looked up across the table from him. “Thank you for enlightening me.” He said, standing up. He wasn’t entirely certain what he was going to do after this. He was at least going to head off for some self=practice on the tennis courts, mostly to clear out his head before making any decisions. And even if he did manage, he still wouldn’t be certain.
"He--hey." Satoshi stood up, frowning. "Weren't you going to show me back?" He paused, gnawing on his lip again. "I said something stupid, didn't I? I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I can't seem to say the right things, can I? Always the stupid things and... Oh, please don't tell Sanada-san! Please?"
Renji turned back. “No, you didn’t say anything that was ‘stupid.’” Renji reassured him. “You said what you needed to say.” Renji gave him a few moments to let that sink in. “Turn left as you exit this building, pass by three buildings, and turn left again. You should find yourself in familiar territory.” He directed.
He started to gather his things. "Right. Uh... Yanagi-san." Satoshi frowned, actually looking completely serious for once. "I won't fight you for her. I can't win. I know that." He paused and rubbed the back of his head awkwardly, giving a small laugh. "Echizen might be going back to Tokyo. If he does, I think I'll follow him. But... Don't rush her? Tomo... You know. She's never honest with her feelings. She keeps pushing things back, because she doesn't feel comfortable dealing with problems. She needs someone who can see that."
Renji paused for a moment. He didn’t want to fight over a girl either. “I’ll keep that in mind.” He promised. “Running away never solves problems though.” If Renji had learned any of life’s lessons, that would be one of the most important ones.
Satoshi's smile turned crooked. "Well, I'd mostly be running from Sanada-san, heh heh..."
Renji smiled a little. “I’ll make sure Genichirou isn’t a problem.” He appreciated that he had friends that would be willing to kill for him, but sometimes Sanada took it a bit too far.
"Good luck, Yanagi-san. I... I hope we'll work this out." He inhaled deeply, focusing, then bowed deeply. "Thank you so much for putting up with me," he said, remained bowed down for a couple of seconds, before darting out of the cafeteria.
