It had been a while since Kachirou had last seen his friends and he couldn’t wait to see them. It only made him kind of sad that he’d decided to come when the senpai were leaving. But he guessed it couldn't be helped.
After finding out which room was Horio’s, he made his way through the dorm halls and up a flight of stairs. It didn't take long for him to reach the other’s room and knock. “Horio it’s me.”
"See? I knew he'd come like... Immediately!" Horio grinned from ear to ear, jumping down from his bed. He was so excited, couldn't wait to see Kachirou, even if it had only been months since he saw him last. It seemed like much longer, maybe because of the distance; it was quite a bit between Tokyo and Hokkaido after all. He bounced over to the door and opened it, pulling Kachirou into a big hug. "There you are!! Get in here, Echizen's here already~!" Without giving Kachirou much choice in the matter, he dragged him inside.
Ryoma sat in his wheelchair, flipping through one of Horio's manga. If you're gonna act like that, you're gonna scare him off, you moron... He didn't show it as much as Horio did, but he was looking forward to seeing Kachirou as well. He figured he had all the reason to; the last time he had seen him properly was years and years ago, after all. And that fact made him somewhat nervous as well, and he held himself back, waiting for Horio to finish his own little greeting ceremony that he seemed to have going.
Kachirou didn't even get a chance to say hi before he was pulled into a hug and dragged into the room. It took him a moment, but he hugged Horio back with a smile and took a step back.
"Geez you could have waited until I was inside the room Horio?" Kachirou said with a small laugh.
He rubbed the back of his head before taking notice of the other occupant in the room. The smile on his face faltered a bit. "Echizen-kun? What happened?"
"Would you like that waiting with some lame sauce? Waiting is for losers or people who don't appreciate their dudes, yo!" Horio's smile faltered as well, however, as he glanced over at Echizen.
Well, of course that would be the first question from Kachirou. Ryoma had expected it, but still didn't know exactly what to say, so he simply shrugged. "Just stu--"
"He was attacked!! Can you believe it?!" Horio looked like he was insulted on a personal level by this fact.
"Thank you, Horio." Ryoma wondered if it would be all right to simply dig a hole in the ground and dump Horio in it. The thought was tempting.
Kachirou looked from Ryoma to Horio at Horio’s quick explanation then back to Ryoma. He frowned. Attacked. But why? Who would do something like that? He bit his lip. Of course Horio could have been a bit more subtle about it and not have blurted it out so quickly. But, there was no use getting into that.
“But why would someone do that?"
Well, since Horio had already let the cat out of the bag... Ryoma sighed, rubbing his head awkwardly for a moment before he looked over at Kachirou. "Dunno. Because they felt like it." He paused, shooting Horio a nasty glare. "Anyway. That was over half a year ago. It doesn't matter." Right? "I mean.. Uh. Anyway. How've you been? How's Mizuno?"
Horio, meanwhile, actually feeling like he had said too much, too soon, went to get three cans of soda from the wetbar in his room, tossing one to Kachirou and one to Echizen, keeping the third one to himself.
Not matter? But, he was in a wheelchair. How did something like that not matter? Despite himself, he let the conversation change subjects. “I’ve been fine. Just been trying to work harder in tennis and stuff. I haven’t really been up to much.” He caught the soda that Horio tossed to him and opened it. “And Katsuo’s doing fine. It kind of sucks that he couldn't come here too though.”
"Well, maybe he still will, you know? Now that we're all here. I mean, we're only missing him and Ryuzaki as it is now," Horio grinned bleakly. And silently added to himself that he sort of missed Urayama as well, but as he had no connection to Seigaku, he didn't voice that thought out loud.
"So, how's that tennis?" Of course Ryoma focused on one thing, and then he could try and convince himself as much as he liked that he didn't care about tennis anymore. "Any new moves?"
“Yeah maybe.” Kachirou nodded. Hopefully. He turned his attention to Ryoma’s question. “I’ve gotten better at it.” He answered. “I made it as a regular, but I think I could be better than I am.” Of course he knew he’d probably never be as good as some of his senpai, but he could always working on improving himself. “But, I do have one or two new moves.”
"Wanna see 'em, sometime." Ryoma paused, giving a slight smile in Kachirou's direction. "You know... Horio said you and Mizuno made the regulars. Congrats."
Horio laughed awkwardly. "Yeah, and you won't believe it! You know something? Katsuo has hair! And he's like... Like that bleached Oshitari guy or something. Curly haired too, it's totally weird! Ha ha ha ha... Ha." Yeah, trying to ease the mood here. And not doing a very good job at it to boot.
"Are you feeling okay?" Ryoma looked exasperated at Horio before deciding that he was better of ignored. "Anyway... I'm not playing anymore. Tennis, that is. I quit."
Kachirou gave Horio a slightly strained smile before deciding to just pay attention to Ryoma. “Oh I see.” He could have said more but decided to leave it alone. “So what do you do now since you don’t play?” He took a drink of his soda.
"I..." Yeah, that was a good question. What did he do? He looked down on his hands, shoulders slumping. "... Wri--write song lyrics, I guess. Go on, laugh if you want. And... Play games. You know. Video games. And... Uh..." His face was distorted by pain and frustration for a moment. "I really don't do much at all."
"You hang out with your boyfriend!!" Horio tried to be helpful, really. "Kachirou, did you know? Echizen's gay! He's dating Dan now!"
".... I will kill you."
“Why would I laugh? You doing something you like and it’s not hurting anyone. And for all I know you’re good at it.” Kachirou smiled. He would have said more, but Horio’s sudden outburst took him slightly by surprise. He shook his head at him. “Uh congratulations to the both of you, Echizen-kun.”
"Tha--Thank you." He blushed, again contemplating how it would be to drop Horio somewhere where he'd never be found. "Anyway. To spare Horio from blabbering off anymore... Yeah, I'm gay. Yeah, I'm dating Tai. I also have HIV, I'm bullied, which you probably will notice once class starts, and I still sing way better than Horio could ever hope to. Horio, why don't you try and fill Kachirou in on what you've been doing now, huh?"
"It's not like it's been a long time since we've seen each other," Horio muttered, feeling quite stupid now. "But... Uh. Yeah. We have some real assholes in class. Just so that you know. They tried to hit Tomo--- Errr... I mean, Osakada. Can you believe it? Anyway... They didn't. I stopped them!" Stop looking so proud, you only ended your ass up in the infirmary.
Kachirou tried to let everything Ryoma said sink in. He’d try to talk to him later without Horio to comment in every so often. And then Horio started talking again and he listened. He frowned again. Bullies... He didn’t like bullies... “I’m glad to hear that she’s okay.” This was a lot more information than he’d been ready for. “Is there anything else I should know?”
Ryoma noticed something from Kachirou's frown, and he mouthed silently, behind Horio's back, that they'd talk later. "Fuji-senpai's dating Mizuki Hajime," he said out loud. "... There's a ghost in the shrine, or so they say. Uh..."
"Osakada has been on a date with Yanagi Renji," Horio added glumly.
Kachirou gave Ryoma a small nod and took another drink from his soda. He tilted his head. "But I thought Fuji-senpai didn't like Mizuki." But then again it had been years so he guessed it could be possible. Maybe.
"Oh? Osakada-chan went on a date? How did that go?" Then he took notice of the not so happy way Horio had said it. "Did it go okay?"
"I thought so too, but... I guess that changed. And don't mind Horio." Ryoma snorted. "The date went fine, he's just bummed he didn't ask her out first."
"Echizen!!"
"Hey, you talk about my shit, I can talk about your lame ass. Only fair." Ryoma took a swig at the soda.
Kachirou blinked. So that was it. "Eh...? Why didn't you say anything? If you like someone you should tell them before someone else gets the chance to," he said with a nod.
"But... But I... I...!!" Since he didn't really know what to say, Horio settled for waving his arms around aimlessly.
Kachirou decided to assume at the moment that Horio'd had a lot of time to tell her at least something before she'd ended up going on a date. "You what?"
He squatted down, pouting. "I don't know. I know, I know, cry more, right? My own fault..." He looked up, one hand behind his head as he gave a sheepish grin. "Oh yeah, sorry if this place is a mess right now. In the middle of moving. You don't mind, right, Kachirou?"
"Ah no I don't mind. My room's not much better." Kachirou answered. "I'm still not done unpacking so the stuff that is out is just in random spots and not put away yet."
"Guess everything's just a mess this time of the year," Horio laughed. "Anyway, seriously, what took you so long to come up here? I've missed you."
Ryoma quietly sipped on his soda, wondering what he could say to contribute to the conversation. It felt a bit weird... It had been so long ago that he had seen Kachirou last, after all.
"I decided to wait for the year to finish. That and convincing my parents to let me come here." Kachirou explained. Or more convincing his mother. While his father had thought it was a good idea, his mother had been worried about him being away home.
"I can't believe your mom let you go," Horio nodded slowly. "I mean... Your dad plays tennis and all, he's in on it, right? I mean, he understands. But..."
"Well... I'm glad. It's good to see you again," Ryoma said, actually smiling towards Kachirou. "Guess I missed you too."
Kachirou gave a small nod. "Yeah... if it was only up to mom I'd probably still be at home." He turned his head and smiled back at Ryoma. "I missed you too Echizen-kun."
