Oishi Syuiichiro was nervous as it is to come to camp. He had just come back from America where he visited his Aunt. He was still jetlagged having gone from airport to camp directly. He walked towards the camp, unsure of what to expect. Would he be alright? He was late already, could he catch up?
He used to be always in the thick of things. He knew what was happening to everyone and made sure that everyone was alright. Because of that, he was nicknamed Seigaku’s Mother. Not that he minded. He was definitely one to take care of all of them - especially because some, if not all of them usually act like bratty pre-school children.
With his luggage behind him and his tennis back slung on his shoulders he entered the main building. Where should he go now? He frowned and opened his organizer to check the letter he got. There was no instruction there to where he should go once he got to camp. Maybe he should find someone and ask.
Hidden partly behind a stack of books, Fuji made his way down the stairs from the library. He figured he had everything he needed now, now all that was left was trying to organize the books and find the best way to study without risking to overload on information. That would just be stupid. He passed the main reception area of the school building and put the books down, resting for a moment, and looked around at the students that lingered about.
He didn't spot anyone from class that he didn't want to encounter, which was good. Just a few general students, Oishi and then some other... Wait. Oishi? Fuji did a double take and stared. It really was him, wasn't it?
"Oishi!"
Oishi was already in a half-state of panic as he realized that he knew no one from the students that lingered about the reception hall. He had almost made the resolve to ask them where to go when he heard his name. He looked around for the source of the voice and smiled when he saw someone he definitely knew.
“Fuji! Thank God!” He said as he rushed over to where the boy was standing with what appears to be an insane amount of reading material. But it wasn’t time to ask about that. “How are you?”
"Good, but never mind that." He put the books away on a table next to him and walked up to Oishi, reaching out with his hands to grab the black haired boy by his upper arms. "Look at you. It's been far too long." Since they graduated Junior High. Three years... "How are you? I didn't know you were coming to camp! If I'd known, I would have told Kaidou, Inui, Taka-san and Echizen. We could all have been down here, welcoming you."
Oishi laughed a little as he took in the sight of his friend. Yes, it has been far too long. Since they graduated Junior High, Oishi had been busy in a different school - Aoyama Gakuin - a magnet school for students who want to get into the Medical Arts. He wanted to be a doctor, as he didnt want anyone else to experience what he and Tezuka had experienced during their last year in Seishun Gakuen.
He played a little tennis here and there in Aoyama but all that time, he had never forgotten the team that made him a stronger man, Seishun Gakuen, and often wondered how everyone in that team was doing. So, it was a welcome sight to him to see Fuji in front of him.
“Yeah, it’s been far too long,” Oishi grinned. “You look really good. I am happy to see you, Fujiko-chan.” he teased then nodded. “I got the letter a little late and rushed here as soon as possible. I didn’t know you guys were here. So, Taka, Kaidou, Inui, You, Echizen and Me?” He was a little disappointed that his doubles partner wasn’t there but he didn’t let that show.
“How is everyone?”
The smile faded from Fuji's face for a second and he nodded over at the hallway that led to the cafeteria. "Let me buy you something while I fill you in, okay?" He picked up the books again and started walking. He wondered how he would start. He knew Oishi, at least had known him, and if he hadn't changed too much he would probably start worrying on default as soon as Fuji said anything at all. Oh well, that couldn't be helped.
"To be honest, I don't really know much about how Inui and Kaidou are doing. I barely ever talk to them." He frowned. He didn't want to say that they'd drifted apart, because that wasn't entirely true; he was the one who had drifted, away from almost everyone. It wasn't something he was entirely proud of, but it wasn't much he could do about it either.
"As for Taka-san... He's dating Akutsu, and when I spoke to him last time, he seemed to be fairly happy. I don't really know much of what he's up to either, but..." They reached the cafeteria and Fuji turned to Oishi. "What would you like? Anything's all right, just say the word."
After hearing that from Fuji, worry lines appeared on Oishi’s face instantly. Fuji doesn’t know what is happening to Inui and Kaidoh? That was quite unusual. They were a family, right - or maybe that was just him. He was at least happy for Taka-san who he knew would end up with Akutsu, but also worried about DV since Akutsu was known for that. Then again, Taka-san was strong.
He hadn’t heard anything about Echizen because Fuji offered him food. Oishi quickly chose a tuna sandwich and some orange juice and turned to Fuji. “How is Ryoma?”
The frown on Fuji's face deepened, and he thought about how to phrase himself while he ordered a chicken salad and some apple juice for himself. "... He's been hospitalized. From what I know... His Achilles tendon is busted and... He looks pretty beat up too. From what Dan-kun says... Oh, and they're dating, by the way. Yamabuki's Dan Taichi and Echizen. Anyway, from what he says... There might be up to a year before Echizen's good to play properly again."
And then there was the matter that he had discussed with Atobe. About how the two of them were positive Ryoma had been sexually assaulted, and quite bad at that. But mentioning that wasn't Fuji's place. He wouldn't. He didn't want anyone to blab about his past bad experiences, so there was no way he'd expose Ryoma like that either.
As the story went on the more Oishi’s eyes went wider. He forgot about food completely. He started to shake as he imagined how Echizen might feel right now. He couldn’t play his beloved tennis. He was all busted up, he was broken and he definitely knew how that felt. How painful was it again when he couldn’t play doubles with Eiji because of a broken wrist? How bitter was the feeling when he found out that he couldn’t help the team by winning? Too painful -- and that was him, what more for Echizen whose life is dedicated to Tennis.
He was glad though that he had found someone good. Dan Taichi, huh. Compared to him, Dan Taichi came a close second to being someone who worries and takes care of people a lot. That sort of relieved him that someone was at least taking care of the dear O-chibi.
“Is he okay now? Where can I find him? Did he take his medicine? How is he emotionally?” The Mother of Seigaku asked. It was the right decision to come here. One of his babies needed him. He wanted to see if Ryoma had lunch already, but then again - he was supposed to get registered. Maybe that could wait.
Fuji bit his lip and stared down on his salad. "Actually, I don't think he's all that good. But... I don't think it's good if you're too overbearing with him right now either. I think what he needs is people who don't act like there's anything wrong around him. I know it's difficult, but..." He sighed, giving a tired wave with his hand. "I'm not Echizen, I can't tell exactly what he needs, and I might be completely off here, but..."
"If you go and see him, promise to be careful, nee, Oishi? If he tells you to stop or back off or just calm down, do that. Don't push it. Don't push him. I wish I could tell you more, but I can't." He poked listlessly at his food. "I'm sorry."
“I’ll just stop by to say “HI!” and give him some omiyage,” Oishi promised. He didn't want to overwhelm Echizen more than he wanted to overwhelm himself. But he may not contain himself and he was definitely scared of what he could witness. He picked up his sandwich and ate a little.
“How about you?” Oishi smiled a little. “Now I want to hear what you’ve been up to in the last three years.” He said as he studied his friend. Something was definitely amiss with his friends aura. There was something lacking.
He didn't reply immediately. He scooped up some lettuce on his fork and put it in his mouth, chewing slowly. What could he say? He wasn't about to traumatize Oishi with the grittier details, but at the same time he really didn't want to make Oishi feel like he was withholding information from him. "Well... I've been..." No, this didn't work, it wasn't the correct way to start. And damn it, but he hated talking about himself to begin with. But Oishi deserved to get the opportunity to catch up, because hey... It was Oishi.
"I mean, I... I went to Seigaku High for half a year, but it... Didn't turn out all that well." You could say that. He resisted the urge to scratch at one of the more prominent scars on his arm, underneath the shirt sleeve. "Then I got the invitation letter to the Camp, and I went. Been here ever since, actually, so it's well over two years now. And well... It's school, and tennis, and..." He paused. Well, he supposed there was a limit to how much he wanted to throw in Oishi's face on his first day here. "... And I've dated Tachibana Kippei for a couple of months now," he choce to end the sentence instead.
Fuji and Kippei Interesting. Oishi listened more. He almost wanted to ask what happened at Seigaku High but he knew it wasn’t right to pry. So he left it alone. At least, Fuji was open enough to tell him about what is going on with him. That only means that he was still one of his trusted friends. He thought about how much to tell about himself as well.
“Kippei, the former Captain of Fudomine?” Oishi smiled.”He’s a nice guy, a little wild on the inside -- I think.Give him my regards. I am happy you found someone, Fuji.”
"Thank you." Fuji smiled, finally looking up properly. "Okay, your turn, Oishi. Give me the juicy details~!"
It was Oishi’s turn to look away to not show that he was about to cry.. “Let’s just say that I have been to hell and back,” he smiled. “Aoyama High isn’t exactly Seigaku. It’s extremely competitive. I can’t make any mistakes or I’ll be bullied, laughed at or jeered. Not that I’m not already. It seems that being from Seigaku could have it’s downs as well. They see me as a threat because I can get offered Tennis Scholarships to Colleges. They think I have it easy. People call me the JOCK or something. They think I have no brains since I could only play tennis. In short, there I have no friends.”
He didn’t add the fact, that they were down right evil to him. He had experienced everything from getting beat up, having his head shoved down a toilet bowl and having his things thrown into the swimming pool. People there simply didn’t want him to be there. But he had dreams of being a doctor and so he didnt let them get in the way.
But it hurt, seriously. That he didn’t have a single ally in the school that he hated so much. Everyone there was so perfect. He had to play their game and fit in. He had to be cold, angry, calculating, suspicious and cunning. He had to defend himself. Sometimes he didn’t even know himself anymore.
Seeing Fuji was a relief beyond compare. He smiled at Fuji. “This place seems neat. Plus, I have you guys here.” He thought that he should consider transferring here permanently, but that may make it difficult to get into a good Medical School.
It was like hearing part of his own story being told back to him. Fuji frowned and shook his head. "I'm... I'm sorry, Oishi. I didn't know. How did you put out for so long? I mean... I left Seigaku after only half a year." You're quite the failure, aren't you, Syuusuke? This was his way of hinting at the reason why he left Seigaku witout actually spelling it out in bold letters. "If you... If you need someone to talk to..." He paused, allowing the silence to speak for itself. "But really. I admire your determination. It must have been difficult."
“Same boat, huh?” Oishi shook his head and sighed heavily. “You know, I guess it’s because I promised myself I want to be a doctor. But sometimes, I doubted that that was the right school. How could those monsters be doctors? They don’t even care about how people feel.” Then he shut up knowing that he was probably just gonna whine nonstop.
“Fuji, same... if you need anyone, I’m here,” Oishi patted his friend’s hand. “You’re family anyway...” He said. Family He liked the sound of that word. A LOT.
“But anyway, it’s a new start, Syuusuke!” Oishi tried to be like his old self. “We’ll be happy again...”
"I hope so," Fuji said slowly, trying on a wavering smile. He wanted to be positive, wanted to be able to look for that silver lining, but right now... Right now he was tired. Surely it would pass, it had to pass, and with Oishi coming here, maybe it would take long for Eiji to appear as well, and that could most definitely work as a vitamin injection, right? "Thank you, Oishi. So, would you like to go and register? I could probably show you around campus afterwards... For a bit. Then I have to go study, I'm afraid."
“Alright, I want to go unpack as well,” Oishi nodded at his friend. “Fuji, it’s nice to have you back around me. I feel like I am finally home.” He smiled and stood up.
Fuji smiled back at him, standing up as well. "Thank you, Oishi. I just hope coming home will be a good experience for you and that your... family haven't changed too much. Welcome to camp."
