Comments: I've tried to post this like four times. Here's hoping to LJ NOT eating it. grr.
The colder it became outside the busier and noisier the library became. Reading, studying, even some of the hiding Tezuka supposedly did had become difficult. The solution was obvious: walk away. Far, far away, until all Tezuka could hear was his own breathing and the crunching of dead leaves under his feet. He trusted himself to find his way back; it wasn't like he had wandered far from ... a path.
Tezuka paused and straightened his windbreaker. It wasn't as windy now, but it was still chilly and uncomfortable. He selected the nearest tree and seated himself at its base, flipping open his book and silently scoffed at this 'hiding' notion.
Tachibana was kicking himself mentally. He'd been on a jog, but then he'd seen something move in the woods and out of pure curiosity he'd decided to take a look, expecting to find a bear or his best friend. He pushed a couple of branches from his way and came to a path which had grown stuck. That experienced he was, walking in a forest that he recognized it actually was a path. The curious part of his nature which chose to sleep more often than not grew stronger and he let the feeling which had led his old ancestors upon Japan take hold. Where did the path lead to?
He didn't stumble upon a bear on his voluntary expedition, and Tezuka Kunimitsu looked as little as Senri as anyone who wasn't his best friend. Tachibana wondered if he had seen the other boy earlier, but decided not to comment on that. Something had to be said, however. Now, to figure out what. He'd been staring at the other ex-captain a bit too long to be polite. "It's a nice weather", he finally added gruffly to the silence he'd brought with him.
This seemed a bit far to go for a run. Tezuka fingers caught the edge of the next page automatically as he replied "It is." He stared back at Tachibana for a moment, then remembered that sitting about and staring at each other was a bit silly and not as interesting as the book in his hands. He turned the page, the sound stupidly loud. "Where are you going?" Away, perhaps. Though - it had been a very, very long time since Tezuka had even seen Tachibana, though. Perhaps because he hadn't been looking. The thought made something like guilt squirm in his stomach and Tezuka forced it away.
Tachibana stared a bit longer. He wondered to himself how could Tezuka look so ...Tezuka, even in the middle of the forest, in a most unlikely place, with a book in his hands. Comfortable and like he belonged there. Must be about the air around the other boy. "Neverland", he answered without thinking, wondering if it was okay to go now, or if he should stay and talk about what brought Tezuka here. No, tht wasn't any of his business. "What are you reading?"
Neverland seemed a ways away. Tezuka didn't ask. There were things he really didn't need to know, and wouldn't understand anyways. He glanced down at the thin paperback in his hands. "Something about a river and humanity," He replied after a moment of consideration. The story itself was a tad ridiculous, but it was interesting and interesting was first and foremost. Tezuka looked back at Tachibana. He felt the awkward feeling of a too-long silence begin to settle, and broke it as best he could. "How have you been?" He had paid enough attention to know that between Fuji and - something at home that Tachibana had seen less stressful days.
"..." Tachibana wasn't one to whine, so when a truthful answer in all its glory was about to set free from his lips, he bit it back, edited, cut, remastered and re-edited it. When he finally opened his mouth again, the answer sounded like: "I've seen better days." A stretching silence and some bird singing somewhwre out of sight, not knowing the place where to open its mouth. "...And you?"
...as expected. Tezuka nodded. Most of them had, he guessed. "I've been fine, thank you," He replied stiffly, leaving things at that. He had been fine, and lucky to have his sister to buffer the painful shock the first two months of class had been.
"I'm glad to hear that." Tachibana nodded. He didn't look at Tezuka now, but ahead along the path. Silence stretched and TAchibana was once again reminded why people didn't get along with him. He was very much as a rock when it came to socialicing. He turned his head back towards Tezuka and nodded again. "Then, I'll be going. Enjoy your book, Tezuka."
Tachibana's apparent rock-ness wasn't something Tezuka minded, especially when he considered how often he was compared to really very silly things like burnt toast and blocks of wood. "Enjoy Neverland, Tachibana." Tezuka tilted his head, looking back down at the book in his hands. A pause. "Cheer up, please." His eyes flickered back to Tachibana, then returned to his book. Where had he left off...?
Tachibana who had taken a step stopped for a moment, and a smile spread on his face. He hid it behind a cough. "Take care", he said with a slightly softer tone than before, and continued on his way. he wondered briefly how Tezuka's little sister was fairing, and how old was she now, but the moment to ask had passed and he deemed it slightly too personal too ask out of the blue. He continued finding a new route to the glorious Neverland.
