So I always give extra credit on my exams. Usually it's a series of ten questions that deal with some of the little trivia that gets mentioned in class. For the other class, my DA has suggested little exercises they can do, too, an idea I quite like but haven't implemented in class one.
Class one, for this last exam, had the question:
"A language's phonology for its native speakers is _______"
The answer is "automatic." Since the other class had problems with this question, I added the hint: "kind of car."
Man, it's so much fun to see what students will do with a hint like that. I have been told that phonology is "Buick," "Acura(te)," "sports car," and numerous other car brands. It was a needed laugh, let me tell you.
My favorite, though, was "Ferrari. (JK I'm not that much of a dumbass.)"
The other class was given word definitions and told to come up with a word based on them and describe the process. I am going to document the shit out of those, for my DA, the class itself, and for yall, because who knows? There could be a new, productive English word in there!
(I am also going to ask them to tell me what the acronym "BANANA" stands for, since so many put that down as an answer. *sigh*)
ah students
