I'm planning my next vacation trip as I'm speaking and I thought I could spend a few days off in Provincetown, Martha's Vineyard & Chilmark, Massachussets.

Big Norman Mailer fan that I am, I need to go & see what he speaks about in his books....not to compare but to see if everything matches my imagination.

I'm not sure yet if I can make it because ( Read more... )

my favorite Norman Mailer's book has to be Barbary Shore. It's about gathering 6 people in the same building in NY, around 1951, who have totally different lives and it's kind of political post Roosevelt novel, describing the low american society then. The main character is a stalinist and I could bet anything Mailer was talking about himself.
He's been in the army just because he wanted to write a novel about how things were working there and how silly it was to join it. He then wrote "The Naked and The Dead" that has been worshipped by the critics. Afterwards, he met a lot of people of course, he was young but politically involved and more than a democrat, he was a communist...probably more by influence than anything but I think Barbary Shore is his most personal work, and critics hated it, it was poorly welcomed. Of course, it's not that well written, but I loved the storyline.
But then there was "the executioner's song". Another of his big hits, and this one's pretty amazing. It's about how Gary Gilmore, a sentenced to death asked to be executed and not saved for his murders. Of course, you go through the trial, the appeals, the statement of his closed ones and it's fascinating.
I probably should shut up now haha, I'm always on roll when it's about Mailer.

PS: how's Boston?! I heard Cape Cod is only a few miles away from the city by boat or plane. The travel is postponed now that I have to move in september/october...but I'll make it in 2010 :D
