Regardless of what I say, I do not see any way words could do the show last night justice because it was amazing beyond my words. To start none of the bands had very many inteligible lyrics. It may sound odd but I think that added something to the show. One bad thing, I forgot my camera, so any proof this really happened exists only in my mind.
- First up was Ariel Pink. I don't really know what they were about. They seemed really cool yet strangely familiar. Pitchfork's description, "Think autistic kids covering Brian Wilson or Tom Waits singing a nursery rhyme or Shakespeare eating shit in an alley or Jesus giving birth to a pack of bear cubs.", makes so much more sense now.
- Wolf Eyes was not what I was expecting. They definitely had some hardcore friends there that decided to push all the scared indie kids with arms crossed out of the way on their mission to the front of the crowd. The band has some a crazy electronic similar to static sound on their cd. After seeing them live, making sounds with chains, a fucked up saxaphone that makes higher electronic tones, a gong, and some other things, everything made sense. Even the hardcore fans pushing and shoving fists in the air all seemed as if thats how it should be.
- Animal Collective... fucking amazing. Much more abrasive live than on cd but in the best way possible. It makes much more sense for me to think of the band in an almost tribal way now. During some of the intense parts of songs geologist would get up out of his kneeling position on the stage and dance and jump around like a wildman. The crowd definitely got into it and it was impossible to stand still because the music just made you want to move around. I swear I was in a full on trance and one with the music for part of that set and all I know is I'm damn glad I wasn't actually on any drugs because it sure felt as if I had been. When they had to finish up so the Blind Pig could shut down geologist jumped on panda bear's back and it was just so full of energy... amazing!
Definitely one of the best, if not the best then at least the most unique show I have ever seen.
