Today, I planned my first health fair for the girls at Olmsted Academy South. First day on the job, and I managed to co-ordinate help from the community and JCPS administration. I got ahold of the district's health department, the University of Louisville Audiology Department, the Louisville Metro Health Department, the Wal-Mart Vision Center, and the staff at Olmsted Academy South. This will be a major event, and will hopefully allow us to identify health issues while there's still money to assist with treatment.
So far, here's what it looks like:
Wal-Mart (free vision screenings)
UofL Aud (free hearing loss screenings)
JCPS (free state-mandated physical exams)
School Staff (discussion about eating disorders and personal hygiene)
Health Dept. (displays about the effects of smoking, as well as obesity)
This is exciting, and took me most of the day. I managed to turn an idea of the Youth Services Center into concrete plans, all though networking and calling in favors. I think this is something I just might enjoy. :)
All that, and I went to work until 10, where I got chewed out over stupid things that had nothing to do with me.
