#56 Mercy Thompson: Moon Called, Volume 1 by Patricia Briggs
The supernatural community is beginning to reveal itself to the wider world, but not everyone is out of the closet yet. Mercy 
Thompson is a shapeshiter with the power to turn into a coyote. She spends her days working as a Volkswagen mechanic. When a young, scared werewolf named Mac comes to her looking for help, Mercy gives him a job. But trouble is following Mac, and by agreeing to help him out, Mercy ends up getting tied up in it all. Mercy Thompson: Moon Called is a graphic adaptation of the first Mercy Thompson novel by Patricia Briggs.
After thoroughly enjoying the graphic adaptation of Gail Carriger’s Soulless, I decided to try out the graphic adaptation of Moon Called. This is actually not my first Mercy graphic novel. I’ve as read Homecoming, a prequel to the series, which was flawed but fun. I found the graphic version of Moon Called to be the stronger of the two, which is probably due to the fact that Moon Called is simply a better story. The artwork, done by Amelia Woo, at first clashed with my current mental picture of the cast. For example, Mercy is depicted here with blond hair instead of being the brunette I’ve always picture her as. I had similar problems with many of the secondary characters, especially Bran and Adam. Once I was able to get over my initial prejudices, I found the artwork to be consistently good for the duration of the graphic novel.
Similar to the Soulless graphic novel, they did a pretty good job adapting the existing story. Yes, moments have been cut, but they do a really good job of keeping all the important parts. This is pretty impressive when you consider that Moon Called (like many of Briggs novels) is a pretty lean work to begin with. It’s been a few years since I read Moon Called so reading the graphic novel made me nostalgic for the early Mercy books. It was really fun to get to revisit the characters as they were so early in the series.
Moon Called, Volume 1, actually only covers half of the Moon Called novel, which is probably a good idea as it would have been impossible to fit the entire novel's worth of story in what’s basically four issues of a comic book. It ends with a bonus story about Mac, which I couldn’t help but wish they would have just left out. The art (which is not done by Amelia Woo) is inferior to the rest of the book, and the story feels cliche and pointless. I like the idea of having bonus material in a graphic novel, but this doesn’t seem to be worth the bonus.
Mercy Thompson: Moon Called, Volume 1 is a worthwhile reads to fans of the series. It took me a little while to get used to the character designs (and I would skip over the bonus comic all together) but I found it a lot of fun to read. I am planning on reading the second volume as well.
