I’m currently taking a class that emphasizes the use of technology in a library setting. One of the assignments for the class was to
create a website as a way to present our assignments. For that, we were given The Non-Designers Web Book as a way to introduce us to the world of web design.
The book stars out on a basic level with information about what the internet is and how to use search engines. Form there on it devotes a chapter or two to specific issues involving web design. It starts out with how to recognize good design versus bad design, and then focuses on issues such choosing aesthetically pleasing colors, graphics, and fonts. The most involved chapters would probably have to be the graphic ones, which give basic information about the types and sizes of graphic and show the reader tips and tricks using Photoshop to make your pictures really something special. The book ends with detailed information about how to get the website from your computer to the internet.
There first thing I noticed about this book was how well designed it was. The pages were laid out in a manner that was very easy to follow, and the pictures and graphics were often rather cute. This presentation convinced me from the start that the writers knew what they were talking about. There is a lot of great information in this book, and it’s always presented clearly and concisely. I’m confident that you could give this book to almost everyone and by the end, they could make a webpage, but whether or not you should drop down the $39.99 on this book depends a lot on what you want to do with your website. For example, I took away a lot of good information about design from this book, and learned how to FTP, but I was unable to use all of the tips and tricks in this book due to both financial limitations and the restrictions of the assignment. For the class, we were supposed to create a page completely in HTML, and there is very little information about HTML here, something that the authors are very up front about. Also, the tips about graphics are great, but as someone who cannot afford Photoshop or other recommended items like a digital camera, or a scanner, the chapters were not much use to me. I don’t consider this to be a fault of the book at all. It’s more that I could not make use of all of the content.
In conclusion this is a great book with a lot of useful information for people just entering the world of web design. Just make sure it fits your requirements before you purchase it.
