Canadian Chaos, eh?

Ok, so my first restoration of updating this blog is going to be a message about this.

http://thestar.blogs.com/g20/It's a blog about some of the protesting going on surrounding the G20. Personally, I don't recommend reading it unless you're really curious. But it got me to thinking. 1. Liberal bias anyone? The writer is JUST talking about ( Read more... )

Glad I could inspire you. :)

I've tried to apply logic to what the Block Bloc does, but there are just so many holes in their ideology that it is impossible. They say they don't want to hurt anybody, just want to take down the corporations. Well, first off, a corporation is a person. That's what incorporation does. Secondly, many of the businesses they perceive as a corporation are actually a franchise. That means that they are locally-owned. When that shop gets attacked, the big scary corporation doesn't pay for it. Insurance probably doesn't even pay for it (prior to this event, our condo corp was advised by city officials that most insurance companies won't cover damage caused by civil unrest). Even if insurance did pay for it, the local guy's premiums will go up. Even if it was a corporation's insurance that paid for it... oh yeah, there are little guys running mom and pops on that same street, and their insurance will go up too just because they're in the same neighbourhood.

Also, continuing on the "not wanting to hurt anyone" tangent... I have friends that work in those shops. I frequently shop in those shops. Nobody anticipated problems on the streets that were damaged most heavily (Queen and Yonge). Those are two of the busiest shopping streets in Canada. People were out on a Saturday as they usually are, shopping away... and suddenly people in black start running around with hammers, throwing bricks, and smashing windows. I don't know how you can claim that you're not hurting anyone. No, as my law course just taught me, you're not committing battery, but you are committing assault by threatening people with your words and actions. And that is hurtful.

Finally... they say that we will all become one of them. Well, I for one won't. I am too grateful to be born in a country where I have the freedom to practice my faith. I could have been born in any number of other countries, where I would be persecuted or even put to death for that. I am also grateful that I was born in a country where women have the right to education, to approximately equal job opportunities, and the right to decide who they want to marry. There are many other rights that women in Canada have that women in so many parts of the world probably cannot even imagine. So let's just be grateful for what we have, and look at peaceful and democratic ways of achieving further equality, or whatever else we want. If you can't achieve get a majority that wants it, well then, you shouldn't have it. It says a lot about the fringe support of your cause when you have to bus in individuals that support it from other provinces and countries... and still can't come up with more than 1000 people. A popular band draws a bigger crowd, thanks.

Okay, I'm done. :)
