I've had this overwhelming sense that anything I attempt in the next few months is going to go horribly awry.
It's not an emo, "oh god, I can't do anything right, kill me now" sort of feeling. Just... one like I'm somehow missing something incredibly important.
In other news, my mother has finally acknowledged that she has no power over my decisions, ultimately, and so has decided it would be more productive to make me feel stupid about it.
Example.
Peggy, my client, got really upset when she found out I was moving to Beckley and would be leaving her. She's NOTORIOUS for getting attached to her staff, and, although the first thing we learn in training is NOT to get attached to our clients because we're never at one site for an extended period of time, her staff can't help but get attached to her.
So, since they were dragging ass on my transfer anyway, I decided upon dual employment, where I would stay employed by REM of Charleston, but apply formally at REM in Beckley, that way I could still work one or two nights with Peggy.
My supervisor here in Charleston readily agreed, so long as I would work Saturday night here, which is a twelve-hour shift (7PM-7AM).
This actually works out quite well, but I'll tell why AFTER I tell mom's reaction.
Mom: So have you been in contact with REM in Beckley?
Luci: Yeah. But they're dragging ass on my transfer, and I really want to keep working with Peggy, so I'm looking into dual employment. That way I can work up here on Saturdays.
Mom: Well, that just doesn't make any sense.
Luci: Mom, I want to. I like my client and I don't want to just up and leave her.
Mom: It's not worth it to drive an hour, Luci, to work one shift.
Luci: It's a twelve!
Mom: Still.
Now, it's hard to convey over the internet, but she was very, very condescending about the whole thing.
Which pissed me off to no end.
Now, for those of you who are like, "She may have a point", let me run some numbers for you.
At REM, until I hit overtime I make roughly $7.50 an hour. Now, I am almost always in overtime by the time Saturday rolls around, as it's the last day in the pay period. That means that Saturday is time-and-a-half, at roughly $12 an hour.
Like I said, a Saturday shift is twelve hours. So on this shift, I make anywhere from $90 to $144 that night.
It takes about five gallons of gas in my car to get from Beckley to Charleston and back. That's about $10.50, at the moment.
So... I profit anywhere from $79.50 to $133.50 for the night.
But no, I couldn't possibly know anything, now could I?
