when the river meanders to the sea; the dresden files, original fic, and other things.

Yesterday, upon checking my friendslist, there were quite literally ten posts in a row linking to the Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy trailer.

Allow me to be a gleeful lemming:

Oh, that's just going to be brilliant. For a John Le Carre novel set in the era of bad hair, anyway.

You may not know this about me, but I am a rabid fan of The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. I've been reading them for years, originally on the reccomendation of katemonkey back when I lived in the UK. I actually vividly remember reading Proven Guilty in the British Museum, and not knowing any of the backstory but thinking it was a cracking good read--enough to get me through some of the less likeable aspects of the first three novels. Anyway, my sister and BIL fell into them a couple of years after I did, and we all obsessively read and re-read and listen to the audiobooks and talk, talk, talk. I would be shocked if a week went by where one of us didn't bring it up as an in-joke, or meta, or on a re-read.

Also, I get to gently scar my sister with thoughts of Dresden/Marcone, which is fun. As we were painting the house this past week, I'm pretty sure I rambled for thirty minutes straight about why Marcone is one of the greatest counterbalances to Dresden in the books despite his relativistic morality.

All this to say that I've become keen to the idea of hosting a Dresden Files ficathon this summer--dresdenficathon last held one in 2008, and since then the fandom has grown. We have
dresden_kink! We have a fairly active fandom tag on the AO3! We have mafiabanter!

So I'm hoping there's enough response to the poll I've put up at dresdenficathon to get this off the ground. If it does, it will be very similar to the Generation Kill winter fic exchange, You Ain't Generation Kill You Ain't Shit [yagkyas] except I'm not going to bother with anonymity. It's just too hard to manage.

Anyway. Please take the poll if you think you'd want to participate!

I signed up for the Shousetsu Big Bang [bb_shousetsu], which is an original gay fiction webzine that neomeruru and someone else on my flist pluvial_poetry! who did an amazing [locked] recs post that I can't find again turned me on to.

I...have not written original fiction since I discovered that other people made up fanfiction in their heads too and dove headfirst into Buffy fandom. That was when I was 17; ten years later (dear god) all of the hundreds of thousands of words I've written hasn't once been original fiction.

To say I find this challenge more intimidating that anything else I've signed up for would be an understatement. I feel so rusty at even the idea that you have to establish your characters' own backstories, that your readers aren't going to have a television show or book or film to do all the expository work for you.

People do it all the time, though, right? I bet a lot of you folks write original fiction. Any words of wisdom?

We've somehow managed to score sunshine here, the first in what feels like a week or more. I cannot convey how miserable this summer has been, significantly more miserable than last year, which also had an awful overcast month of June. Sunshine is great. Sixty degrees when the blue skies are out is just maddening. I'm not saying I want 100 degree temps--you east coast US people can keep it and your humidity--but could we compromise on 70, maybe 80? The PNW has my heart, but it also has my SADs.
