My space story

Dear all,
Ok it is offical. I have way too much time on my hands at work. I try to study and be efficient but today it is just not happening. Today is "Guest Teacher" Day at my school. Great since we get visitors. And we get cool classes. A short list of the cooler ones; boxer-cise, knitting, calligraphy, tea ceremony, and many more. :) A veryr cool oppertunity for the kids. And I think Kojo is the only school that does this. I have no classes today and since I had no classes and I am going to do the boxing thing later (did it last week, really cool!) I brought my gym clothes. But i did not bring my Japanese prep stuff. Bad me...
So I have been working on the science fiction story I have always been thinking about. (And you thought all that reading about science, history, and the news was just for fun) My current outline is up to around 5 pages. I have a time line of basic events till 2050 (I decided that we get to colonize Mar in the next 50 years!). I tried to include major advancements in technology along with things from very different fields. Normally when you read a SF book everything is basically the same. Except for one or two things, everyone and everything is still exactly the same as everything right now. I mean ask anyone under the age of 25 to imagine the world without the internet. I mean really it would be a semi-impossible task.  We grew up with it. It was our primary source of information for almost all of our lives. While most SF revolves around this idea (one thing comes and the world is entirely reworked around it) that is normally not entirely the case. Look at us. The internet is here and still there are plenty of people that have no attachment to it at all. (of course none of them are going to be reading this article but hell...)
I am trying to imagine a world that really could exist in 44 years. The hard part is keeping all the ideas in my head. I mean I have to think about all the advances in biology, physics, and space sciences. Other major feilds are good, but these 3 most directly imapct people's life. For example, cloning and the ablity to change a person's DNA is a huge power. How will this shape the world in the next 50 years? Gataca??? Utopia??? Distopia??? Now think about an advancement in math. Good but really only useful once it helps us in physics or bio/chemistry. How will human's efforts to honestly enter space (past low Earth Orbit) change the world we view? New space race? What about the relations of the US and China? Russia?
These are the things I am currently working on. My main points so far are that with the raise of space mining (asteroids and the Moon) and orbital power stations, OPEC and many one resource economies in Africa will fail. Hopefully not all at once, but over time they will become less and less important. How will Africa being even more unstable effect the world? Loss of OPEC as a unifying force in the Middle East??? Good??? Bad??? Genetic manipulation??? What wonders and horrors will it bring? The same technology that could make us all taller and stronger could also just as easily turn into a weapon more horrible then any we currently have. So any thoughts on these ideas or others that you think are important to imagining the world in 50 years let me know.
