Research - canon or fanon?

Hi Guys, Hoping one of you can help me out.

Does anyone know of any scenes that backup the commonly held belief that Xander had a crappy childhood? So far I can't find much.(although I'm re-watching a load of the episodes, and the odd one I missed first time round) Is all fanon?
