Indeed. I think it's the little things that reveal how a character is *habitually*, not just on the occasions when he's making special exertions to save the day or whatever--which is why that moment actually did more for me than the expected heroism at the end (even if Donna did have to fight to get him to make that effort, I expected it to happen).
good on you, Doctor. He's actually paying attention to things beyond himself, even beyond the praise that he could give, picking up on the fact that Quintus' *family* needs to tell him that he was brilliant.
He seems to have learned his lesson from Martha's speech. I certainly hope so.
brilliant in particular being his Marthaword, I don't mind telling you I squeaked at that sentence. :D
and, a theory on the clothes (okay, probably not correct but still fun) is that he was just never quite sure about Rose's choice of style, and so was quick to mock (wee naked child, You sure about that t-shirt?) or make her change.
Hee. I did the same thing. "I know who *else* is brilliant, and so do you, Doctor! You even told Donna!"
Also--heh. Maybe it was just Rose, after all. :) And I'd actually skipped over the moment in "The Empty Child," somehow, even though it's a cute moment.
