my library was dukedom large enough

Or too large. I saw a preview for an upcoming news report on the "tiny house movement." Because my mom is a big fan of HGTV, I've seen these tiny houses before, every now and again--and I always think, "Dude, my *books* wouldn't even fit in one of those things ( Read more... )

Whenever Andy and I talk about our dream house, the one thing that remains consistent between discussions is that we want a huge study/library with wall-to-wall bookcases. :D

A very important feature! The people on home improvement shows never seem to have any books, which means that I can never take them seriously when they're trying to explain how to have more space in small apartments, or whatever. I cannot use an entire shelf of a bookcase for one picture frame, a vase, and a few decorative rocks, you know?

Yeah, my bookshelf at home was crammed with books in every available space. If they couldn't all fit side by side, some of them were piled on top, or even piled up in front. No way I was going to waste shelf space by leaving a whole shelf free for decoration! (Of course, now I'm not at home any more and my books are mostly just in boxes, so it's a moot point.)

I suppose there probably *are* people who live like that, but I'm not sure I know any personally. And I definitely couldn't--I've already got books stacked in front of the books on my shelves. And, er, some stacked on the floor. Though most of these are books from the university library, because I can check them out for a whole semester. This is not, perhaps, a privilege I should be allowed. :)

One of the things that sold me on this house was a bookshelf *in every single room.*
