'The Hobbit': Martin Freeman to play Bilbo Baggins; other roles also cast Soooooooooooo excited about this. Oh my goodness! First, we get official confirmation that Peter Jackson will be directing The Hobbit, BOOM! Then Martin Freeman is cast as Bilbo Baggins BOOM, BOOM!. Christmas just came freakin early ladies and gents!
I can't wait see what Peter Jackson will make of this. His latest effort, The Lovely Bones, was very disappointing. The CGI effects were the best thing about the movie and, if you've read the book, you know that is not a good thing because the novel is incredible and the movie adaptation of it didn't come close to the quality of the book. I remember my heart wrenching for the family when I read that book. When I watched the movie I honestly didn't give a shit about any of them. The lush grandmother was my favorite character and in the movie she was reduced to a cliche caricature. I actually fast-forwarded through many parts because it was 2 1/2 hours long and all over the place. It was a real shame actually. But, I think, the story was not well suited for Peter Jackson's style. I think the genius of the book was the sutlety of it. The idea of what happens to a family after a tragedy like that, how they make sense of it or don't make sense of it, how it affects each person differently. A story about that is about little moments, those ones that seem innocuous but that become so much more complicated after a tragedy like that. Moments like, how do you make a cup of coffee after you daughther was raped and murdered, and you don't even know who did it or why.
Peter Jackson's style is better suited for bigger moments, bigger stakes. I know that King Kong didn't do as well as the hype surrounding expected it would, but, I loved that movie and I thought he did it brillantly. The only complaint I had was in the casting of Jack Black and Adrian Brody. I think Adrian is a great actor (Jack Black, not gonna lie, he pretty much always annoys me - except in High Fidelity), but I don't think they were right for the roles.
So, I'm happy that the casting for this seems right on target! Can't wait till the first teaser comes out.
