Ficlet: Sisterhood

Mar 17, 2011 21:04

For magickalmolly, from a prompt at my journal: Kelsi, sororities.

Kelsi had been part of a few sisterhoods in her time, and none of them had really actually been that great.

First were her actual sisters, one older, one younger. It wasn't that Kelsi didn't love them. It wasn't even that she didn't like them. It was just that her older sister made it very clear that she wanted everything to be All About Her, and their parents complied; while her younger sister was pretty sure their family was the most embarrassing thing of all time, and did her best to never have any contact with any of them after the age of five or so. Kelsi had high hopes that, someday, when they were all adults, they'd be friendly and see each other on holidays and whatever, but in the mean time she didn't exactly feel embraced by the loving arms of sisterhood or anything.

Then there was the Drama Club. Their first day of ninth grade, Sharpay had declared they were a sisterhood of performers, all their to support one another and help each other shine. Which Kelsi learned quickly meant that everyone else was there to make Sharpay shine. Kelsi didn't actually mind that as much as most people thought -- she was happier writing the music than having everyone actually look at her on stage -- but still. Whenever she tried to stand up to Sharpay, Sharpay would just shriek "Sisterhood!" and then berate her for hours on end. It wasn't worth it.

At least Juilliard didn't even pretend. There were no fraternities or sororities, since it wasn't like any of the students had that kind of time. But for the first time, Kelsi found out, there were other girls she actually felt at home with. There were other piano players and composers, other girls who'd probably been called "mousy" for most of their lives, other girls who were happy drinking tea and rereading Jane Austen novels.

She didn't know if that was sisterhood or friendship or what, but she was sure of one thing. It was home.
