The first time I came to the house I live in now, I looked across the pond as I was driving in and saw the meadow and nearly drove off the road. It's a half-moon-shaped rough boggy piece of grass and scrubby trees and every time I see it I flash back on this Waterhouse painting, though the black and white photograph of the painting more so than the painting itself, oddly enough. There's really no similarity between the two bits of landscape - Waterhouse's is much less rough and you can only see a bit of it and there's no slope at all, but the eerie familiarity is there. It's familiar enough now that I just ignore it, but I'm in a bit of a weird mood today and walking out into the garden, I looked up and saw it properly again and it's just as unnerving now as it was the first time.
