For the Bible Tells Me So

So they're airing this awesome documentary on the sundance channel right now: For the Bible Tells Me So. It's structured around four Christian families with gay or lesbian children, and with their experiences the creator Karslake strikes a good balance between tragedy and hope. The documentary goes way beyond "wow Christians hate gays," by also offering a textual analysis of three Biblical passages that address homosexuality (Leviticus, Romans, and the story of Sodom and Gomorrah,) and explaining how Christians have, and may continue to reconcile homosexuality with the Bible and/or their churches' beliefs. Of course, towards the end there was still the usual montage of gay bashing and a bit on Focus on the Family, but it definitely wasn't as "scare tactic" oriented as some other documentaries I have seen.

I also appreciated the interviews with different church leaders with university degrees. Their opinions spoke to a sense of balance I do not often get from most of Christians who appear in documentaries. They offer an analysis of the Bible as a text instead of God's word and acknowledge the short comings of the Christian community, but all within the context of honoring God. Really, I just like any Christian who seems to authentically believe that God is more about love than anything else, seems like a good move.

There was also a really awesome cartoon explaining the science behind homosexuality.
