I finally saw My Bloody Valentine! In 3-D! I have thoughts, which sort of include spoilers.
Just to get it out there, MBV was not a good movie. I am shocked (shocked!) that rottentomatoes.com gave it such a high rating. I understand that the rating had everything to do with the return of 3-D and nothing to do with plot, acting, script, ect. But still, those other things are intensely important, and completely absent from the film.
Actually, correction. Obviously I'm biased, but I thought that Jensen Ackles, Jamie King and Kerr Smith did an excellent job considering how ridiculous their lines were. Especially in the climatic reveal scene, which was so off, and thus hilarious, that I would almost rec' the movie just for that part. Seriously, at a certain point, you can tell when the three actors have realized how stupid their lines are. Smith and Ackles have a high-energy exchange, when they're accusing each other of being the killer, and Smith clearly just decides to have fun with it, like, "Fuck it, I know these lines are stupid, but whatev" and Ackles is right there with him, on the edge of mocking. Really, it's the only way the scene would have turned out anything more than craptastic.
So yeah, it sucked, but I guess no one was really expecting anything. Like RTs' critics demonstrate, everyone has more interest in the potential of 3D. And in that respect... I mean, it was a cool experience, but I think it took more than it gave. Perhaps if someone grew up only watching 3D, they would be okay, but I mostly found it disorienting. It also ruined (if I can say that) a lot of shots in which actors stood behind porous surfaces, like fences, or walked behind pillars. Whatever was in the foreground came out of the screen, and thus whatever was behind that became blurry and forgettable. And since I went to stare at Jensen Ackles, not the fence he hid behind, I was a bit peeved. So yeah, I'm gonna say no thanks to 3D. Give me back my old school slasher flicks.
2 weeks from now is Friday the 13th. Get excited!
