Fannish 50 musings

So something I'm probably going to do with Fannish 50 this time around is ramble on a bit in posts for discussion, and this one's going to be on the subject of happy endings. Those of you who write, do you feel that you have to give your characters a happy ending? If a more ambiguous or unhappy ending feels more realistic / works better for what you had in mind, do you go with that? I'm thinking of this because I'm trying to work out where I want to take a multi-chapter fic, and while there's still a lot I'm trying to work out at the moment (I could probably do with a rewatch of the show in question) I'm unsure how far to take it down the happy ending route. I know there was one time ages ago where I had an idea in mind but then got talked into a happier ending than I'd originally been planning, and someone had commented that the original ending I had in mind would have worked better, and hand on heart I think that's probably true.
