Bonnie wasn’t going to lie, she had considered the possibility of becoming a vampire even before it crossed Enzo’s mind, before they were even together in fact, back when Kai had first put Elena under that sleeping spell. But she knew Kai well enough by that time to know that the idea had probably crossed his mind as well and any kind of loophole that any of them might have come up with, Kai had probably already thought of it and planned a way to make sure it couldn’t be used as a loophole. If Bonnie could have been sure that by her becoming a vampire, it would mean Elena woke up due to Bonnie being technically dead, she would have done it, no questions asked. But anything could happen, and she didn’t want to take that chance.

She had even discussed it with Damon while they were in Amsterdam, when both of them had had too much to drink and Bonnie had blurted out “If I’d had vampire blood in my system yesterday, would you have let that crazy driver hit me?”

Damon had stared at her. “What are you talking about?”

“Did you even wonder, just for one second, whether you’d still have saved me if I’d had vampire blood in my system, giving me the chance to become a vampire, and possibly letting Elena wake up?”

Damon shrugged and took another sip of his Bourbon. “I knew you didn’t, so it wasn’t an issue.” Sensing that Bonnie wasn’t satisfied with that answer, he went on to say, “Look, I know you wouldn’t want to be turned. So yeah, I’d have saved you.”

And it was true, ever since Bonnie had watched Caroline and Elena go through their lives struggling with the initial transition, and after she had watched her mother deal with losing her witch powers after being unwillingly turned, she had always known that becoming a vampire was not something she wanted.

The only time she had ever thought about it for one moment was when she had realised that she and Enzo were in it for the long haul, and had started to think about the fact that there was going to be a day when she would grow old and die, while Enzo would live on long afterwards. It was something she had always known would be an issue; she could remember Elena and Caroline arguing about it as long ago as when Elena and Stefan were together. And the prospect of living for eternity with Enzo, with not having to watch all her friends staying the same and knowing that they would be together while she grew away from them, held some appeal. And when Enzo finally admitted to Bonnie that he didn’t want to take the cure, that he had spent so long as a vampire that he could hardly remember his human life and didn’t want to go back to it, Bonnie considered it again. She no longer had her magic, after all, and that had been one of her reasons for holding on to her mortal existence for so long.

But the same issue remained with Elena, as long as Bonnie had any doubts about what would happen to her if she was turned, Bonnie knew she could never choose to turn.

She just hadn’t counted on Stefan Salvatore. Still determined to supply Cade with as many souls as he could, plus the desire to lash out at Damon, Stefan had determined that Bonnie would be one of the souls he was going to provide, and Enzo, realising what he was about to do, had forced his blood down his throat in a desperate attempt to save her before Bonnie could stop him. So when Stefan did make an attempt on her life, with the blood still in her system, the decision to become a vampire had been taken out of her hands.

Bonnie awoke, Enzo and Caroline by her side, each of them holding one of her hands.

“What happened?” she asked.

“Bonnie…it’s Elena.” Caroline looked like she was trying not to cry. “When Stefan snapped your neck…Elena woke up. She managed to call Damon, and he set off over there straight away to find her…”

“Elena’s awake?” Bonnie asked. As she looked at Caroline again, she realised that what she had initially taken for grief was in fact tears of happiness.

“Yes, she’s awake, Damon’s on his way to find her now and bring her home to us, we’re all going to be together again after all!”

For a moment, Bonnie allowed herself to imagine the look on Kai Parker’s face if he were there right now to find out how his plan had gone so badly wrong, that the loophole Bonnie had never dared try had worked. Bonnie and Elena were going to be reunited, so were Damon and Elena and she was going to be there to see it. As she looked at Caroline again, she realised that her initial guess had not been so far off, that Caroline was thinking of Stefan, and how he was still working for Cade and she didn’t know whether she would ever get him back. But maybe with Elena back on the team, they would be able to work something out, together.
