Charlotte’s first glimpse of Miles came when she boarded the freighter.
“So what’s yours?” he’d asked.
“Sorry, what?”
“Your secret. 80% of people on this boat have one. See that guy I was just talking to? He’ll tell you his name’s Kevin Johnson, but that isn’t his real name. So what’s yours?”
Charlotte stared at him, nonplussed.
“Sorry. Guess you’re one of the other 20%. Anyway, I’m Miles.”
She’d heard that name before… It was on the sub, leaving the island, and a woman had become upset. “It’ll be okay, Lara,” Jeanette had said, comforting her, taking her baby from her lap. “Charlotte, you take care of Miles.”
