NaBloPoMo Post #9: 9th November 2008
I wasn't gonna bother writing about Obama and the recent elections because politics is one area I have relatively few opinions on. However, on the radio this morning they mentioned that William Hill, a popular bookies over here, has received numerous requests from some strange and bizarre people who wanted to bet on the odds that Obama would be the subject of an assassination attempt by the end of the week. Aside from that being utterly ridiculous (needless to say, William Hill said "wtf, no"), it was also mentioned that some white supremacist groups had already announced that they were plotting assassinations. This really gets my goat so I wanted to talk about it. This isn't going to be particularly eloquent as like I say, the vast majority of the time I don't care about politics so I don't really have evidence to base it on or concrete opinions I want to express. I just wanted to express my dismay more than anything.
You know, I tried to write some stuff here about why I thought this was stupid. But then I realised that the arguments I was putting forward weren't really well thought out, and probably a lot of the things that I think are wrong or incorrect. And in addition, what's the point in me saying 'that's really stupid, they're effectively shooting themselves in the foot by turning white supremacy into a form of terrorism' when it is really stupid yet the white supremacists are still going to think and do these things anyway because they're irrational and extreme? All I can really say is that I hope all these plots are foiled so the poor guy is actually given a chance to do some things for the country and have people moan about that instead of just moaning from the outset that he's black and therefore can't do anything right to begin with.
This is why I don't normally write about politics - too controversial and my opinions don't really matter anyway 'cause they're pretty dumb ><; This is also why I've yet to vote in a British general election (I had to vote in an Australian one but only because I would've been fined otherwise). Honestly speaking? I don't really care. They're all as bad as each other, in my opinion, so there would have to be a really attractive alternative to encourage me to get off my ass and actually be counted. Gordon Brown's pretty pathetic, but to be honest a more attractive alternative has yet to present itself at this stage. I think that's why Obama got in in the first place - people got off their asses and turned out to vote for him because he was actually a better option. I think. But I don't know, because in honesty, I haven't bothered to look up any of his policies - again, because I don't really care. They talk about voter apathy and I'm probably a pretty good example of that, but Obama in turn is a good example of what needs to happen to dispel voter apathy. That's yet to happen to Britain, really. I think I'm probably exercising more democratic power by withholding my vote and only using it when it needs to count than I would be if I just voted without really caring who got in.
Next thing that gets my goat, from the Kink Meme:
Seriously, what? I don't know why this irritates me so much, maybe because the anons requesting are just inflicting their own opinions on the characters. Why would somebody like Klavier care about Proposition 8? Or Edgeworth for that matter? As if Edgeworth would do something as public as a civil marriage. Pfft. You may as well request something like "My boss yelled at me at work, ubuuuu, make Edgeworth prosecute him so I feel better!"
Okay, so people are entitled to request what they want, and I would never actually voice that opinion on the Meme itself (it has enough wank and I'd get shot down in a flash) - but it nonetheless annoys me.
And on a concluding note:
If black people never existed, a sizeable chunk of good music in this world wouldn't exist either. The voice of a black singer has a completely different tonal quality, very distinctive, and if we didn't have that, along with the many musical styles that originated from their source cultures, the world would be a much poorer place. Go go Motown!
