Sewing for Dolls

Nov 05, 2012 22:13

As always, a thread came up on DoA and I felt the need to respond to it in 'longform' or in other words, saying whatever the heck I feel like at the moment.

I enjoy sewing for my dolls- I get a lot out of it! My sewing skills develop (to the point where I might be able to actually make something human sized one day...) and I get to make and customise the clothes to my exact specifications. It's pretty amazing I must say.

The other bonus is that I don't have to pay for it. Don't get me wrong, I've already spent a fair amount: I bought the sewing machine for $200 off ebay when I was still in America, and then I bought all my fabric, one haul at a time from various trips to fabric shops. I'd say in total it probably cost me about £300.

The initial investment though, was well worth it. I've got 14 dolls right now: how much would it cost to give each and every one of them a wardrobe to rival my own? I love changing my dolls clothes, I love giving them new outfits and expanding their characters as I discover their style. If I had to purchase all those pretty clothes, I'd A) have a LOT less money for moi, B) have dolls better dressed than moi, C) be missing out on a massively enjoyable aspect of the hobby D) have that much less ownership of something that belongs to me.

The last point (aside from the first two) is the biggest.I OWN my dolls. I OWN the hell out of them. Why? Because I bought them. I sacrificed a new pen tablet, a newer laptop, better financial stability, and that much more money in the bank every day to own them. I'm not gonna let anyone else have the satisfaction damnit. That's why I do my own face-ups, and I sew my own clothes.
