Because fact really is weirder than ficiton....
So, because of the most recent example of some idiot fangirl taking other people's fic and swapping names and posting them as One Tree Hill fic, fiercelydreamed is doing this thing where you pick a fic of yours and then pick the weirdest fandom you can think of and do a little name swapping and post a chunk so everyone can laugh.
I thought about doing it; I could take Seeing Red--the one where John rapes Rodney while under the influence of alien drugs--and turn it into a Care Bear fic.
And then I remembered something worser. Back in the day, about ten years ago I think, there was a case like this. This chick took a bunch of fic, including one of my TNG Picard/Bev Crusher fics, and turned them all into fic for her favorite show that featured UST. What was that show?
The Nanny.
But Ruth, I hear you say, TNG is, you know, science fiction and The Nanny, not so much. She only took one of my fics and it was a stream of consciousness thing involving Bev thinking dirty things about Picard while she's trying to get to sleep. The rest of the fic this person took was Mulder/Scully stuff by some seriously respected writers. We all consoled ourselves that we were in good company at least.
And on the surface, going from John and Rodney to, I dunno, the Blue Care Bear and the Yellow one seems more of a stretch. But then you need to remember just what Fran Drescher sounds like and think of her speaking lines intended for Gates McFadden or Gillian Anderson. It just doesn't get worse than that.
There's one other example of this kind of thing that always kills me.
One night while chatting together, padawanhilary and I started talking about this crappy BDSM fic we were both reading. Hil said something like "Curt would never do that." And I kinda of blinked and said, "Curt?" Because the fic I was reading was on Master Apprentice and was a Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan fic. We compared notes and realized we were reading the same fic on seperate lists, her on the Velvet Goldmine slash list and me on MA.
So basically this chick plagiarized herself, swapping out names and descriptions, and posted the fics on both lists On The Same Day! When I called her on it on MA and other people chimed in, she said that she thought the scene fit both sets of characters and that's why she did it.
The story was crap and didn't work for either Qui/Obi or Curt/Brian, but that someone would think you could make a fic work for both sets of guys boggles my mind.
