Sure. But what are these 'things' you are trying to do, other than make money? You claim that you intend to "broaden fanfic's appeal," and leaving aside the fact that the fannish community, for the most part, is wildly uncomfortable with that concept, what about your stated goal requires that you run a for-profit site? I can think of a twenty ways right now of 'broadening fanfic's appeal' that don't involve money, pissing off and alienating fandom in general, or inviting lawsuits more than we already do (which is to say, not very much).
I also find the fact that you make money off of other's intellectual and artistic property very ethically disconcerting, especially considering that you'd hang them out to dry if they were ever threatened because of their participation in your shady dealings. I don't feel comfortable supporting an organization that refuses to support those who provide thier profits, and I am not suprised that others feel the same. Also, I seems like bad business practice, but perhaps that is just me.
By that way, telesilla, this is really a great post. I am so impressed that someone did this.
