$21 a week for food doesn't buy you much

"We don't have to wake up worrying about the next meal. But there are a lot of Americans who do. I think it's wrong. I think it's immoral that in the U.S., the richest country in the world, people are hungry."

Four members of Congress are living on a Food Stamp budget. The co-chairs of the House Hunger Caucus--Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Mass.) and Rep. Jo Ann Emerson (R-Mo.)--and two other members of the Caucus--Janice Schakowsky (D-Ill.) and Tim Ryan (D-Ohio)--are going to eat for one week on the budget of the average person who receives food stamps. And nothing else; they're all not eating at the various catered functions that make up a politico's life. The McGoverns--Mrs. McGovern is doing it to but their two young kids aren't--are blogging about the experience and it makes for interesting reading. The blog also has several of the press articles written about the challenge.

I love that Lisa McGovern admits that it's a publicity stunt. Good on her, because if it brings attention to the problem then it's a stunt in a good cause.
