Reading
Just finished --
The Serpent and the Pearl -- a novel about the Borgias by Kate Quinn and I've got to say that I can't remember being so annoyed with the last ten pages of a book than I was with this one. It's worse because I liked the book up to that point, but then, she decided to end it on a cliffhanger. Normally I'd be okay with cliffhangers, particularly when I know what happens to the real historical characters, but this feels like she suddenly realized she needed a cliffhanger and said, "ooops!" and made one of her characters do something that seemed out of character to me to tack on that cliffhanger. But since I really like her portrayal of Giulia Farnese, the pope's mistress, and I do want to know what happens next, I'll probably read the next one.
Also finished --
Blood and Beauty by Sarah Dunant -- another Borgia novel. This one shifts POVs from Pope Alxander VI, Cesare and Lucrezia. I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the next one. She handled the whole Lucrezia and Cesare relationship well and she's pretty sympathetic to Lucrezia.
Reading right now -- I just started reading
The Luminaries by Elanor Catton. I'm not sure about it yet; it's about Gold Rush era New Zealand, but I'm finding her style a little disjointed. I think it's the point and I might be struggling a little just because the style of the last two books I read were so straightforward. I'll have to see if the story is compelling enough to keep going.
Reading next -- no idea. There's a Michelle Diener I haven't read yet and I kind of feel an Austen reread coming on, but I'm not sure.
Writing -- Nancy and I are still working our way through this huge Trust Verse Baseball AU thing; it's already longer than the SGA Big Bang we wrote and we're not very near the end. It's also a really rare pairing in a small fandom, so it'll be interesting to see if anyone reads it. I'm also working on several solo fics, including something that keeps getting longer and longer and that I promised to someone and would really like to finish. So of course I started something new last night. *facepalm*
Also, how to tell that it's a Telesilla baseball fic--people will go out to eat. Part of it is that these guys are on the road half the season so they eat out all the time, but I'm noticing I have them do it when they're home too. I think part of it is that once I make these guys single, I can't imagine them doing much in the way of cooking.
