The same goes for cuts and gouges. The smallest little paper cut hurts like no other, and yet when I gouge my leg or shoulder, I pass it off as a mere scratch, since it doesn't hurt. Until I get a closer look at it and decide that I'd best go get some medical attention....
For some reason, I thought they were epees, but I just looked, and they are, indeed, foils. But that's fine to learn on. But we fence SCA and not Olympic, so we don't follow the pansy rules that make it a "gentleman's sport", just the important ones to keep things safe (such as masks being a requirement) but realistic (such as what kind of blow does what kind of "damage"). No electrical targets. You actually schwack each other with blades. SCA rules are designed to make it an actual and realistic fight where nearly anything goes.
Which leads to bruising, of course. When a lunge makes contact and the tip gets smacked into your body, it will leave a bruise.
Yes, I knew about your epee. 'Cause that's the one of yours we hear about. The one of Robin's we hear about is the schlager, so... I never really thought much about the foils. Your epee is what confused me.
I always wanted to learn to fence from about the age of 10. Unfortunatly my family were too poor to be able to let me do it. (I'm not complaining about that. I got to express myself plenty of other ways :)
I've wanted to learn since before I can remember, but I never asked because I thought my parents wouldn't like it. (I wasn't even allowed to have a water gun because it looked like a gun. This was back when Super Soakers were all the rage.)
I'm 23 now. I'm first learning. You're what? 26? You can learn, too. You ain't exactly over the hill yet.

That is a *gorgeous* icon. May I snatch it? My prettiest music icon is this violin, but I don't play violin! I play clarinet!

But the schlager kicks ass, so that's that.
