Ya'll may or may not know this, but I work for a not-for-profit called the Indiana University Telefund. Basically, we call alumni and ask for money. It's a pretty miserable job, and I'm eager to leave it in either a week or the end of the summer (depending on certain circumstances).
People are pretty rude, pretty angry that they're being called and asked for money, often taking their anger out on me/other callers. It's unfortunate, since usually people refuse because money is tight, and we're just people desperate for work too. I mean, if you're doing anything that involves calling people in order to get money out of them, chances are something in your life isn't what you want it to be.
Last night, there was a fellow I called who said he wouldn't give because he thought I (really meaning the university, I imagine) was un-American and that our faculty was too liberal. I said I wasn't aware of any political affiliations the university or faculty have, especially considering it's a publicly supported institution, and he only responded, "Well there's a lot of things you don't know about, but you can learn."
Wow, eh?
