Why do I recommend it?
This is the best answer I've ever read to one of the basic questions about Jack's nebulous past. It cames from a different universe, of course, but that doesn't make it any less plausible. It's unfortunate that the story seems to have been abandoned for the time being, but hopefully, the author will eventually find the time and the inspiration to continue it.
