Day 5

Jan 02, 2010 10:16

Once upon a time there was a poor fisherman and his sister. They lived very meanly in a small cottage by the sea, and the fish he caught and the washing she took in just barely paid for their lives. One day the fisherman was out with his nets and he caught a beautiful golden fish. The fish pleaded for his life and offered to grant the fisherman anything he wished in exchange. The fisherman was a man of few needs, but he knew that his sister's washboard was broken, so he asked for it to be good as new and he let the fish go. When he went home he found his sister exclaiming over the magically repaired washboard and he told her what had happened. His sister was furious and demanded that he return to the fish and ask for something better. She gave him explicit instructions.

The next day the fisherman went out again to find the golden fish. When he found it, he explained that his sister wanted more, and asked for a fine house with flowers in the windows. The fish agreed and the fisherman went home. Where his cottage had been, he found a nice house all painted white, with flowers in the window boxes. He went inside and found sister wife sitting comfortably in the kitchen. He was glad to see she was pleased, but soon her face fell. She flew into a rage and demanded to know why he hadn't asked the fish for something grander. She sent him back with explicit instructions.

The fisherman went out again to find the golden fish. When he found it, he thanked the fish for the house and explained that his sister wanted more. He asked the fish for a mansion with gardens and a servant at the door. The fish agreed and the fisherman went home. Where the white house had been, he found the gate to beautiful gardens. He walked through the gardens to a grand mansion, and was greeted at the door by a footman in livery. He went inside and found his sister sitting comfortably in one of the parlors. He was happy to see her so pleased, but soon her face fell again. She flew into a rage and demanded that the fisherman return to the golden fish and ask for more. She sent him back with explicit instructions.

The fisherman went out again to find the golden fish. When he found it, he thanked the fish for the mansion and explained that his sister wanted more. He asked the fish for a palace and to make his sister queen of all the land. The fish agreed and the fisherman went home. Where the mansion had been, the fisherman found a grand palace with a moat around it. He crossed the drawbridge and was lead into the grand hall by many servants. He found his sister in lush robes and a crown of gold, surrounded by courtiers. He was happy to see her pleased, if a little intimidated. Soon enough her face fell. She flew into a rage and demanded to know why the fisherman had asked for so little. I she could be ruler of all the land, she should also be ruler of all the sea and sky as well. She sent her brother back with explicit instructions.

The fisherman went out again to find the golden fish. When he found it, he apologized for bothering the fish so many times and made his last request. The fish agreed and the fisherman went home. There he found his old cottage and his sister waiting at the door. She opened her mouth in a rage, but as per his wish she found herself mute. The fisherman and his sister stayed in the cottage and he, at any rate, lived happily ever after.
